Henry Ford rule: count the # of tires. That's the # of cylinders you need.

Diamondpilot - what is your mileage towing?

The only towing test done was a 250 mile trip pulling a 20' enclosed trailer on tandem axles at about 6500#. It got almost 13 mpg. Half highway at 70 mph and count roads at 60 mph.

In comparison my 08 Nissan Titan got 9 mpg doing the same load.

08 Silverado 6 liter same trailer and load gets 8 MPG, 07 Silverado Dually dump LMM gets 9 MPG same load but with lots more power than the 6 liter. I know I have both. My old Dodge Ram 1500 5.2 with 2 snowmobiles got 10 MPG with small trailer.

Hard to beat direct injected turbos. VW/Audi 2 liter turbo engines go like heck also and maintain great mileage compared to their ancestors.

Nissan, What's a Nissan?

Best 1/2 ton truck built from 04 till the Eco Boost.

About to be the best again late summer with the 5.0L Cummins

Yep. My other truck is a 06 F350 4x4 diesel. I have some mods but nothing major.

For fun I have a 07 BMW 335I. 3.0 Liter strait 6 with twin turbos. 0 to 60 in 4 seconds and a 1/4 mile in 12 seconds stock. Love blowing the doors off the so called Muscle Cars all while getting 25 mpg average and 30 plus on the highway.

My 2007 F250 V10 gets 12 empty but that drops to 11 with the boat...

Are you disrespecting the no replacement for displacement adage too?

I towed plenty with 2 5.3's and I still wouldn't call them "gutless". They pulled just fine albeit at a high rpm under load. That's just fine by me for a multi-purpose motor, which is exactly what it is..Does it compare to my last 2 6.2 GM's, no, but the 6.2 is a different animal although the gas mileage is almost identical. Just because it ain't your thing doesn't mean it's garbage or gutless. I've heard more than enough about some of the 5.4's but I don't comment as I don't and haven't owned one. If someone is happy with their other brand, I'm happy for them. I don't disparage what they own as some sort of expert.

We all know DP is a GM hater. No front page news there. My 2013 4wd Suburban has the 5.3 w 3:42 gears w 6 speed tranny. It's far from gutless even weighing in much heavier than a 1/2 ton Silverado pickup. I see the #'s of the Eco-Boost and they are impressive. I just prefer a V-8 engine in a truck or large SUV. When it comes to a V-8 gasser, give me a Chevy (or GMC). New technology is great. Not against it at all. GM has done many changes to their V-8 truck line up through the years to make them better. I just know a GM internal cam V-8 will give me many years and miles of use. It's nothing to see a 5.3L GM truck with 100,000+ miles on it and still going strong.

It's nothing to see all brands with 250,000 miles and still going strong. It is what it is. The 5.3 finally has the power the others did 10 years ago. It's the GM way, the safe approach. They sit back and watch what works and what doesn't then follow the pack.

I get a kick out of the new GM cargo system. Soft drop tailgate, my 05 F150 had that as does my buddies 04 Titan and my 08. Cargo tie downs that are moveable. Nissan and Toyota have had that for more than 10 years. And the best of all is the step into the bed. Howie Long is laughing all the way to the bank since he got paid off his Ford bashing "Man Step" commercials.

I will give them credit though, the step in the bumper is more user friendly.

By the way the 6.0 is a good GM truck engine. A little thirsty but a lot of bang for the buck.
