Water Hauling Trailer

Just understand that what ever size tank you get you will need to fill it all the way. So don't think about getting a 1000 gallon tank and only putting 800 gallons in it for now until you get a bigger truck.

800 in a 1000 gallon tank isn't that big of deal.

500 in a 1000 gallon tank is a different story.

I hauled a lot of water in the back of a Dodge 1/2 ton to fill my swimming pool. I can't remember if it was a 250 or 300 gallon tank. At first I wasn't filling it all the way, but got tired of making trips so I filled it all the way after a while. It was overloaded but it was a paved road and I took it easy. The sloshing affect wasn't that bad in that small of a tank, but I can see where it would be in a larger one.

Is it an option to haul water in the back of your truck? You can't haul a lot, but if you hauled every couple of days, I wouldn't think it would be to bad.

Depends on the distance. I got a 100 gal tank for the back of my small pickup, but that got old when the trip was 50 miles round trip. Then I went to a 500 gallon trailer. That's better, but now I'm thinking of putting a 1000 gal tank in my dumptruck. I suppose it's different for everyone.

It is a 40 mile round trip for me and it is in the opposite direction of work. I was looking at one company that had a floating baffle ball system that is supposed to allow you to haul partial filled tanks. They say that with their balls in the tank it reduces the stopping distance of a partially filled tank by 40%.
I saw the results of a partialy filled tank in slow motion first hand one day. A fuel half full fuel truck we were following down a winter logging road spun out on a icy sidehill, and about 10 seconds after he stopped moving one tire started to raise and slowly, probably over 20 or 30 seconds the truck proceeded to roll over onto its side.
I was chatting to a guy at work who used to pull 650 gallons on a trailer and said it got old really quick in the winter so he upgraded to an old $1200 3 ton grain truck with a 1200 gallon tank and loved it. I just might have to buy that old truck my dad has sitting on the farm.

It seems to me you need to form a rural water resources board and make yourself president. :D Can you lay pipeline in your spare time.:D

There s already enough fighting between the two towns over water and who has a right to use it. I will stick to myself on this.

I'm a little late to the discussion, but I have also been looking at hauling water for my blue berries. I normally pump from a stream, with portable pump, but the dry weather has dried that up. Have been looking at authentic Military Surplus and they have some heavy duty 400 gal water trailers. I assume they use a lot of these in the desert environment.

You might want to check out Govtliquidation.com, they have a contract with the military to sell all their surplus. I picked up a Duece and a half, Blazer M1009, and 2 Cargo Trailers and now looking for a water tank trailer. You pick them up right at the military Base where they are stored. Good luck.

It has been a long time since we discussed on this thread. I have been getting water delivered by the tandem truck load and it was working out great, until last week. On December 24th our low level alarm came in, which gives us about 4 days. All the water hauling companies were off for Christmas until January 2nd. So we ended up going t the local farm supply store and buying a 500 Imp gallon tank. I borrowed a 7000# car hauler trailer from my cousin.

I am going to pull a couple more loads with my cousins trailer, and if I still enjoy hauling my own water I will go out and by my own trailer.

The trailer I am looking at is the PJ F8 deck over. 7000# axles. I am looking at either the 16' or 18' length. I will probable get a dove tail and flip over ramps if possible. This will allow me to haul my tractor on it with ease also. I chose this trailer because with 500 gallons of water it will be right at the tow rating of my truck. When I upgrade to a 3/4 or 1 ton diesel in 2 years I will be able to safely add a second 500 imp gallon tank onto the trailer!

Anybody have experience with pj trailers and reviews? Also should I get the 2 5/16" ball coupler or the pintle hitch? I like the pintle idea because it is harder for people to borrow!

You are going to want the ball hitch for that size trailer. Almost all of the truck and hitch manufacturers are going to require a Weight Distribution hitch to get to the full GVWR of the trailer. You cannot use one with a pintle hitch. Pintel hitches are more commonly used by medium duty dump trucks and equipment trailers. They also tend to have a lot of slop so you get some jarring when you start and stop.

I would go ball. Pintle bang around too much for my taste.

X2 on the pintle hitch. The trailer will tow much better with the ball setup. I have a PJ F8 and love it. I would recommend getting atleast a 20'er though because you need more length at times to balance the weight out. Mine is 20' and I wish it was 24'. If I could do it all over Id get a 24'er with monster ramps to make loading easier but still have a flat deck.

That is a pretty looking trailer.

I'm doing a little math in my head and a 1000 gallons of water will weigh a little over 8000 lbs. I'm not sure how much an imperial gallon is, but I thought it was a little more than a U.S. gallon. If you have a 7000 lb trailer, that's 7000 lbs including the weight of the trailer. This puts you over weight by about 2500 lbs. If you aren't going very far over smooth road, you might be O.K.

The trailer I am looking at buying has a 14,000 lb rating. One imperial gallon of water weighs exactly ten pounds. Yesterday I had the 500 gallon tank on a 7000 lb car hauler trailer. I pulled it over my dads truck scales and the trailer axle pair had 7062 lbs on them.

You had it maxed out.

Nice that you have scales to use.

Hi all. I am thinking about hauling my own water to my home instead of paying for deliver and was looking for input onto my different options.

Just curious...Will you have any issues with the water sloshing around in the tank? I know tanker trucks have baffles in them to reduce this effect otherwise the tow vehicle can get pushed around by the liquid moving.

If filled to the top it doesn't slosh bad at all. It actually pulled way smoother than I expected.

I am in the minority but I like pintle hitches easy to hook up positive latch system and able to handle more abuse. I have never used a weight distribution hitch, but usually I am able to get my trailers load balance the way I like them or I use a gooseneck trailer.
I was in your same boat with the water hauling I got a 1600 gal tank to put on my gooseneck. I don't need water other than during gardening season. So a big tank works good for me. And its only $13 to fill it on my schedule.
