There are lots of good used one out there and new ones are pretty inexpensive. Think most new ones are in $250 - $450 range.

You can probably buy a used one cheaper than making one. Check the local farm auctions and craigslist.

Replies 2&3 may have some merit, but don't let them put you off. If want to have the have the satisfaction of building one yourself, either obtain some plans or find a scoop similar to what you want to build and make your own plans from it.

I like building stuff too but get on Craigslist, I bet there are a few for sale for $150 right now. There are in my area.
