looks as though he is continuing a driveway or something. Even so, much better to just grind it down below subgrade and stone over top of it. That way you don't have to deal with the hassle to get rid of it. most people don't take them.

Yeah that was my thought... 30 mins with grinder and done.

I thought the OP said he removed a minimum of 2 feet of grade, from that whole section of his property. Would grinding have been a good option in that case? Usually I've seen stumps ground maybe 4 inches below existing grade. That was my understanding why he dug it out, anyway.

I didn't see his post regarding the 2 foot elevation drop. Please disregard.

I wasn't disagreeing with you. I am curious. I have a small section of property to grade about 6 inches lower, and I have a huge oak stump (cut about 8 years ago) to remove. I have a 28hp with FEL and may borrow another 33HP with FEL and BH. But, maybe grinding would be an option. I had initially ruled it out. How do you know when to rule out grinding vs digging? TIA

For 6 inches I would certainly grind. An oak stump would be very hard to dig out. Especially of any size. The grinder should make quick work of it. Of course depends on size of grinder.

Thank you. I'll have to reconsider that option.

There is another way to deal with stumps. A guy here in town invented/perfected a big blade that mounts in place of the bucket on a skid steer. Quite a few equipment manufactures now have versions of it. (he got shafted on the royalties). Works like this.

It is an aprox 4 foot circular saw that runs parallel to the ground. I am thinking that if you dig around the tree you can saw it below grade.

Pine trees can have a DEEP tap root, if you can dig a deep trench on one side to expose most of the tap root you may be able to push/pull it over, then pull it out?
that's a huge stump - here's how deceptive a root, on a much smaller tree can be, we cut down the previous fall stump large- 002.jpg tried pulling it out after digging around it some, the tractor snapped the top in two 3&1/2 hours laterstump large- 005.JPG this is the hardest i have worked the grapple I think I need to re-sharpen my chainsaw...:)

Those are big stumps as well!

This stump was right at the corner of my deck, that's the biggest reason it had to come out.

Here's a picture of the bridge that is completed, I still have another 15 tons of rip rap to lay in the ditch.

Actually, the two pictures are of the same stump.
the 1st picture shows about a foot- was above ground and it didn't look like much

Really didn't think it was going to be a big deal to get it out of the ground.

The second picture shows how much was concealed a little over 7 feet was underground.

that rip rap will sure make it look nice, and keep the water a lot cleaner we're still in the clean up, and field work stage Nice work on the culvert:thumbsup:

Well between the L35 and the cat skid steer, we got it out. Neither one of them could pick it up so we used both backhoes to clean enough dirt off to lift. The Cat rocked all the way back to the side of my hill where I dropped it.

Then since the L35 was here, we've replaced the 36" diameter pipe that serves as the bridge to my house.

Wow a lot of work

You might have convinced your wife you were out working, but those of us here on TBN know you were really just playing!

Yeah....i am guilty, I wish there was another way to put that rip rap in though. That actually does seem like work.
