How Do You Fill Your Diesel Tank

I got tired of the 5 gallon containers so I got a 13gpm fill-rite pump 12v model and two 55 gallon drums.

I initially had a problem with the new yellow diesel fuel containers. In fact, I was ready to pump the fuel out (by some means) and throw the **** cans away... but then I figured them out.

The fuel container has two springs in its nozzle, one for a on/off (which I just leave in the open position. Actually the little outside lock spring busted off.. no biggie, just rotate the lock to ON). There's a 2nd spring built into the nozzle which you can't see. When the nozzle is pushed back about an inch, it allows for fuel to flow.

Near the tip of the nozzle is a plastic lip. All you need to do is rotate the container up and hook the nozzle's plastic lip over the edge of your tractors fuel tank. The weight of the container should cause the nozzle to slide back about 1 inch and the fuel will flow nicely without spilling a drop, if not just push down and apply a bit of downward pressure on the nozzle and fuel will flow.

I do all that and the can still leaks where the collar and spout meet. No amount of fine tuning will keep it from leaking.

I got so frustrated with the new gas cans I finally found a 5 gallon water canister. It looks just like an old military style gas can, but it is blue vs red or yellow. The best part: because it was meant to hold water, there is a vent on the other side of the spout which makes pouring a fast and easy to do.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the No-Spill brand of gas cans. They are absolutely awesome. NO-SPILL INC. | Lenexa, KS 66215 They are very thick, well made cans that resist collapsing and blowing up a lot better than the common ones for starters. But the vlave is the key. Tip it up (using the 2 handles - well positioned) and set it where you want it. Then push the button with your thumb and they unload the gas in a flash. I've never seen gas pour so quickly and so controlled from a can. Release the button and it stops instantly.

I am wondering if one of the Canadian members knows if this No-Spill container is available up here and where.
I was looking at HomeHardware, Canadian Tire, Wally World, Gas stations but with no luck. Thanks.

No Spill says the cans are available on Amazon. I emailed the company to see if they are available in Canada. When I get a reply I'll post it.

Go to NAPA and get a good heavy duty plastic diesel or gas can depending on your fuel type. While you're there pick up a tubeless tire valve. Drill a hole on the top rear flat section of the proper size for the valve. This section is thicker. Thread a string into the can and pull in the valve. Now thread on a tubeless valve puller onto the valve and finish pulling it in until it seats. Now remove the guts from the valve and put the cap on. Now you have a great can that works and will not leak. When you lose the cap they are readily available. I have done many of these for myself and my friends and everyone loves them............

Vesseys seeds sells the No-Spill as a "Mantis" (like the tiller)
Mantis No Spill Gas Can - Veseys

Im looking for one myself. Hopefully local so I can see it in the flesh first. Stihl dealers in the states carry them... Wonder if the dealers up here do too?

Thank you very much. Awaiting your feedback.

Meanwhile I quickly checked with Amazon US.
The can is USD 31.49. Shipping and tax is almost as much which gives a total of roughly USD 60.-- :(. A bit too much.
Might check out these Flo n' Go containers and pumps. I know they're available at Canadian tire.

If I am trailering the tractor back from using it somewhere, I'll always fill up on the way home. Otherwise, I drive the tractor a little over a half-mile to the Love's truck stop near the interstate and drive right up to the pump. I have yet to try to fill from a gas can. I'm sure it would be a pain. Can't stand to ever fill my lawn mower up using it's gas can, but have an idea to use this tubeless tire valve stem from now on with that.

Just heard back from No Spill and unfortunately their cans are not approved for sale in Canada.

That jives with what I was told by Vesseys seeds over the weekend. They had to pull the Mantis no spills because they couldnt sell them here.

Wonder what the issue is?

Wrenched my neck one too many times climbing up on my L45 with a five gal can, and standing up on the tire awkwardly and wate for ever for the dumb can to fill it. Finally bit the bullet and bought a hand crank transfer pump and a square 55gal tank from TSC. Soooooo worth it. I used to dread to have to fill the tractor. Now look forward to it, thats in tell the 55 gal tank needs to be filled like today, $190.00. Built a wooden dollie with wheels, and just use the forks to lift it in and out of the truck to fill it.

How do you fill the 55 gal tank? Is it in the bed of your pickup? Always heard not to fill a tank in the back of your truck but to place it on the ground due to the possibilty of static electricity igniting the fumes somehow. Not trying to be the safety police but like the idea if it can be done safely.

I agree. I just heard about them in this thread. I found a local dealer and got one for my 2 stroke engines. What a great container.

I run a lot of mix through chainsaws and just started using a No-Spill a few months ago for 2 stroke. Nothing better!

1* Built a wooden dollie with wheels, and just use the forks to lift it in and out of the truck to fill it.
Why do that isn't that what the pump is for?

2*Then all you have to do is wrap a chain around the 55 gallon drum of fuel an hook the other end on the back bumper and drag it home.

Not an issue with diesel fuel, since the vapors aren't explosive.

Plastic gas cans can be an issue with static charge and gasoline vapors, since they don't ground well to the metal fuel nozzle. It is a good idea to put your plastic GASoline cans on the ground when filling them.

I have a 250 gallon heating oil tank in my barn, with a 110 volt, 20 gal/min Fill-Rite pump, meter, filter, and auto shut-off nozzle. Just like a truck stop, but I don't need to insert my card to turn the pump on. Fill the tank once a year when prices are down. That can be a scary bill, though!
