How Do You Fill Your Diesel Tank

There is a saying
Which is as wise as it is witty
That a camel is a horse
That was designed by a committee.

I curse mine every time it leaks fuel all over the side of my tractor.

Do you curse the camel or the can for leaking on your tractor:laughing:

Personally, I dont have any of the new cans, but I never use the spout anyway. Either a big tractor funnel as others mentioned, or just straight into the tank. My kubota has a huge like 4" opening. So If I take a 6 gallon can and only put 5 gallons in it, no spout and no funnel and I can do it without spilling a drop:thumbsup:

I use a Rule pump I purchased at Hamilton Marine. You can see it [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Rule-iL280PK-Marine-Submersible-12-Volt/dp/B000O8EZH2"]here[/ame]. I replaced the alligator clips with a cig. lighter plug and used clear vinyl tubing for the hose. I drop it into the diesel can, plug it into my BX's aux. power outlet, and turn the key on to fill the tank which takes about a minute. To keep it clean, I store it in a plastic pail with a lid between uses. It has worked great so far; this is the second year with it.

I gave up on gravity feed since I like to use a 2 micron filter.

I have used one of these American Wick SI-60 Hand Operated Siphon Pump - Plastic for about five years now. I think I payed about $1.95 or 2.95. Only a drop or two spilled. Put a couple of gloves on the engine hood to keep 5gall tank from scratching it. insert siphon, pump 5-6 times, watch diesel go into tank while doing ... nothing. Easy and cheap too

After nearly slipping off a snowy tire with an open fuel jug a couple of times, I built this siphon arrangement. The primer bulb is from an outboard tank, the ball valve was surplus from another project.

You slip the long end into the fuel jug, stick the short end in the tank. Close the valve, squeeze the primer bulb 3 or 4 times until it fills with fuel, then open the valve and wait about 5 minutes for the can to empty. If the tank won't hold the full can, simply close the ball valve to stop the siphon action.

The hardest part is lifting the 5 gallon can up to the hood, and I can manage that with no problems. It was the balancing act holding it waiting for it to empty that was tricky.

I've probably transferred 300 gallons of fuel with this so far, and it works like a charm.

I have a 55 gallon drum on a platform with wheels so I can roll it out of the way with a 12v pump on it. I just fill the drum up when I get the heating oil filled. It's just like filling up your car at the gas station.

Old skool tractor funnel (large) and no spout on the jug. Fills very fast and no drips.

I got a nice 100 gallon diesel set up similar to yours and 300 gas tank with nice hand pump and filter.

The only problem is they want $1600 to come fill them so I am still using 5 gallon jugs. :D

The son and I got some the other night in the pick up and just filling some of the cans was $175 plus we hit a deer so then I wish I had the tanks filled. Thankfully we hit the deer going and not coming.

I would like to get away from lifting the tank and placing it on the hood. A gallon a minute is too slow for me, I bet you can do the same with a much larger hose and cut your time in half.
I like the idea of the boat transfer pump but lifting the wet pump hoses cables out of the tank I think will make a mess over time.
Right now I have two plastic yellow diesel cans.
I think they are 5 gals each not 6 as I wrote earlier.
My tank size on the B3030 is 8 gals, So I can just empty the diesel can and not worry about overfilling. Then I have the other diesel can in reserve.
The cheap battery pumps are nice but still dealing with dripping diesel after a while everything gets covered. I would rather pay for a nice quality well built pump with a quality hose and nozzle but I want it to be portable.
The 55 or 100 gals outside tanks are the best with the gas station nozzle and meter. But I don't want to pay up to 500.00 at one time to fill them.

I have yet to see the cats *** in a portable container with a quality hose and pump.
Until then I guess the big funnel with the add on plastic vent that was posted earlier will be better then what I doing now.

It would be nice to only remove the cap on the diesel can to fill it.
Take the cap off the tractor place the nozzle in and fill then hook the hose on the can, no pulling things out of the diesel can.

My dealer gave me a "NO-SPILL" brand diesel can when I bought my tractor. It works so good that I went and bought two gas cans for my lawn mowers and chainsaws. I can fill my push mower with a five gallon can and not overfill or spill a drop.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the No-Spill brand of gas cans. They are absolutely awesome. NO-SPILL INC. | Lenexa, KS 66215 They are very thick, well made cans that resist collapsing and blowing up a lot better than the common ones for starters. But the vlave is the key. Tip it up (using the 2 handles - well positioned) and set it where you want it. Then push the button with your thumb and they unload the gas in a flash. I've never seen gas pour so quickly and so controlled from a can. Release the button and it stops instantly.

Now if you are going through a ton of diesel then some sort of tank/pump is probably a better solution, but for gas cans, these are the best I have ever seen, by FAR!

I have smaller ones for my chainsaws and bigger 5-gal ones for the tractor, but most of the time my tractor lives on the trailer so I just pull it up to the pump when needed.

Edit: HA! typing at the same time, alkabo! :)

I have the small one gallon for my chainsaw also and I finally have no problem overfilling the small tank. As was mentioned it stops instantly and also you have no gas coming out when positioning the gas can until you press the button.

Just got done installing valve stems in the back of all my newfangled cans. 9 all together between gas and diesel. Works good!

I watched the video, Not bad. 3 gals a minute I can live with that.
I'll look for one locally.

300 gal overhead tank with filter and long hose, gravity feed.
fill tank from 100 gal tank in back of diesel pickup using 12V pump, takes 3 trips. fill when diesel cost is down, use when cost is up:D

I initially had a problem with the new yellow diesel fuel containers. In fact, I was ready to pump the fuel out (by some means) and throw the **** cans away... but then I figured them out.

The fuel container has two springs in its nozzle, one for a on/off (which I just leave in the open position. Actually the little outside lock spring busted off.. no biggie, just rotate the lock to ON). There's a 2nd spring built into the nozzle which you can't see. When the nozzle is pushed back about an inch, it allows for fuel to flow.

Near the tip of the nozzle is a plastic lip. All you need to do is rotate the container up and hook the nozzle's plastic lip over the edge of your tractors fuel tank. The weight of the container should cause the nozzle to slide back about 1 inch and the fuel will flow nicely without spilling a drop, if not just push down and apply a bit of downward pressure on the nozzle and fuel will flow.

I use a 5 gal No Spill can too & have had no problem with it, in fact it works quite well and fairly quickly. The best thing is it does stop when the fuel level in tank covers the end of the nozzle.
