So I want to learn how to weld and use a torch. What is the best way, trail and error? I can weld a little but its not pretty and nothing fancy.

See if there's a class at your area community college, adult ed or vo-tech school. For a small fee you can avoid a lot of trial and error, learn things that you might not know to try and learn from other peoples mistakes.

Maybe run an ad in your local Craig's list for someone to give you one on one instruction. 4-hours with someone standing over your shoulder has to be about the same as a week in a class room with 20 to 30 other students, and one teacher. In the last few months I've helped a couple people, both of them said I really jump started their welding.

I tried that once at a CC. It was 90+% book work, with only a bit of welding at the end.

Maybe they were training welding inspectors, not welders.

the oxy-acetylene handbook by linde/union carbide is the best book i know of on the subject.i recommend it.while you are experimenting,keep the acetylene under 6 psi.
