Around here they plant 3-year old semi-dwarf almond tree varieties and harvest the first crop in the 3rd year after planting. And, yes, these orchards cover 1000+ acres.

I was talking about planting pines or something along those lines for pulp wood/lumber. :)
On another note, though, do you think almond trees would grow well in the Southeast? I haven't done much research on them, but would like to plant a few on our property for personal consumption.

5 years ago or so i bought the house i grew up in so i have a small group of apple, peach, mullberry, and pear trees. but i dont sell any of it. I just eat as much as i can and my family takes a bunch what ever is left over i give away to anyone willing to eat it(ussually not hard to come by). Funny thing is i started most the trees from seeds as a kid just goffing around, back then i never figured they would actually amount to anything but hey im not complaining :D

Probably not. The Sunset National Garden Book shows South Caroline in Zones 28(coastal) 31 and 32 (inland) and almonds are not recommend for any of these zones. Almonds do best in regions with long hot summers and don't do well in areas with cool summers or high humidity. Here in the North Sacramento Valley, most of the world's almonds are grown. The climate is Mediterranean (semi arid, 18 inches per year average rainfall) with triple digit temperatures from July thru Sept. The almond orchards are irrigated with driplines to get the almond trees through the dry months.
