I would add landpride grading scraper was not a believer till I used on my 1500 foot road all I can say I doubt I will use the box scraper on the road again. Mine has already paid for its self in amount of rock I didnt have to buy this week.

For snow a rear blade dirt work a box scraper.

Have you ever used a land plane grader? I have all three and in my own experience, it is superior to the box blade and rear blade for road use. Now granted, the BB is a more versatile tool, but for road grading, I find my Land Pride Grading Scraper better, and for two entire miles of road, there's just no way I'd settle for anything less than the best implement.

Tony: some rear blades are not all that heavy and may not give you the ballast you think it will.

Tom, I was very careful in the way I worded my post, I did not say one was better than the other and in a prior post said I would really like to have all of them.

For my use, I simply cannot justify the cost of another piece of equipment because one is a little easier.

I have a 10' wheeled drag scraper that works great for roads too, but it is too much trouble to move from farm to farm.

Again, for my uses/needs/finances etc. a box blade works well enough that I cannot justify the cost of both and see the box blade more versatile for me. If I could comfortably afford it I would have a grader scraper, hydraulic back blade and box blade with hydraulic scarifiers.

Hey, I totally understand about the money and you doing what's right for you. At the same time, when you say that you can't see a land plane grader working as well for you, I think my question as to whether you have ever used one was a valid question. I think that matters because the OP may interpret your statements to mean that you have used the land plane grader and that you find it no better than a box blade. When you say that you can't see a land plane grader working as well for you, is that statement one from experience, or is it an an intuitive guess? I do see your statement about the 10' wheeled drag scraper, but I think that's a really different beast. Please understand that I am not trying to be confrontational. I just think it matters insofar as whether advice given to the OP is advice born of experience or born of intuition. Having used both the BB and the LPG, my experience has been that the grading scraper is infinitely better, and when it comes to an OP who has two miles of road to grade, and is facing a choice between implements, I think my question is both fair and valid.

I have appreciated all your posts in the past. I think you offer fair and balanced advice for the most part and I appreciate your courteous manner. In this one situation, just for the sake of objectivity, I really think it is fair to ask if your statements are based on having used the LPG or based on intuition.

Perfectly understandable. There is an old saying something to the effect, "I have never seen the sun come up in China, but I know it does."

I am 64 years old and grew up farming and have driven/operated tractors since I was so small/young I had to literally stand on the clutch pedal with all my weight to depress it. So when I look at a grading scraper and through all my vast experience and knowledge, not to mention my keen powers of observation (tongue in cheek) determine there is indeed no blade in the back, I can only conclude that it will not work for pushing brush or transporting significant amounts of material.

Since these are two things I do frequently, why would I need to spend the time operating one.

Let me try one more time, I have seen the grader scraper in operation and really like it; may buy one some day when I can afford it. While I have not used one personally, based on my observations, I accept that for road maintenance it is easy to operate and may very well be better than a box blade.

Having used a box blade, back blade, wheeled scraper, FEL for many years for a variety of tasks including road maintenance, a box blade works well enough for me to believe it to be a more versatile tool. (OPINION)

If posters must have personal experience before offering an OPINION on a tool/tractor/backhoe then many on here whose opinions I value will be rendered meaningless as they only own or have owned one tractor.

If it will ease your concerns:

I have never used a grading scraper personally, so please disregard any information I have provided on its utility or lack therof.

Fair enough. When it comes to the versatility of the BB, I agree completely that it is more versatile in its ability to move soil and shape it. OTOH, the grading scraper does one task in a superior manner.

As with a lot of implements, weight is often your friend. A land-plane grading scraper that is 6 feet wide and weighs 600lbs is not going to cut through grass and weeds as well as one that weighs 1200lbs. My 7 foot grader that weighs in the neighborhood of 1400lbs has very little if any problems cutting through plant growth that may occur on our road.

My four footer cuts right through all grass easily. I do cut any grass down low before scraping, however, just to get some of the material out of the way beforehand. There are a lot of dealers who sell items that they have never actually used.

For 2 miles of road, you definitely need a land-plane grader blade. These are the single best implement to maintain a road. It's nice to have a box blade and a rear blade and you may find yourself wanting one or both later on, but hands down a LPGB is the best implement to maintain a road with.

The land pride (and several others) use the same ripping shanks as the box blades as well as the same cutting edge (it just has two of them). They also weigh as much. While I don't own one yet, I was going to get a box blade but now I'm going to build a grading scraper with rippers, I can't see how a dealer could say that with a straight face.
