Just a 4 footer to cover the tracks or can it pull a 5 foot disk?

I would think if you have light soil and don't set the disk too deep, it will pull it if you have R4 tires. My turfs don't do as well.

Could I talk you into a four foot tiller?

Sure... if you include the added cost... :) A tiller would be preferable except for doubling the price tag.

Haywire, is this patch you showed on the other thread the garden you're thinking about? Do you have anymore plots to work, or is this about it?

I'd probably be doing 2 others that size if I got the implements.. friends gardens.

With a tiller you at most might be two times across and you are done.

With a disc, while you will never get it to work as good as the tiller even on the tenth trip!!!!

Not true at all. I can do it just as well with a disc, and do it faster and cheaper.

Depends again on your soil. We have disks and with our hard clay soil, you might as well save your time unless you plow first. It takes a very heavy disk on our fields to get by without breaking the soil up.

If the ground is not tilled regularly, like in a field, all a 4-5-6 foot light to medium disk behind a compact tractor is going to do is scratch the ground up a bit unless you spend all day running around on it and you still won't get good penetration. We have to use a rotary tiller, plow or something.

All dirt is not the same.

I guess I was assuming we weren't talking about sod. Neither a disk nor a tiller is designed to break soil, though both will with enough time.

The tiller would be a two pass system unlike the disc at a mere 100lbs per foot at maximum weight for a three point hitch. I certainly wouldn't even consider trying to convert sod to tilled soil with clay as a factor. You might have good luck in sandy soils but not anything heavier.

Todays farmers normal secondary tillage disc harrows run 300 to 400lbs per foot of cut and that is for secondary after a plow of some sorts!

Agreed, sod is a bear to break up with either, but even in our ground a regular duty 3-point won't do it. The family that farms our land uses a heavy disk or chisel plow. When we were farming it with much smaller equipment, we had to use a mold board plow and then a disk with a harrow drag.

I probably assumed wrongly on the type of soil as that will surely make a difference.

Well, you didn't try very hard, but I think I talked myself into a tiller. After talking with a few other people about disks and seeing the price of disks with decent adjustments, I started an automatic monthly transfer to my savings account for the purpose of funding a tiller this fall.

I figure if I'm breaking new ground, I can tear it up with my middle buster and then till.

It appears that my middle buster won't be much good in anything but decent topsoil... two passes pushed the 4" of topsoil out of the way and just scratched the clay underneath.

I think I'll put a 12" bottom plow on my 2 year implement list.

I've went to Barlows at least twice to buy a disc. Steve keeps asking me why I want it and twice he has told me it won't be very good for what I want to do with it so he has talked me out of buying it from him twice. I now have a single bottom plow that I bought/traded Milkman out of and I may try using it this year to see what it will do and then use my tiller.

No need to use the middle buster first get a king kutter 4' tiller from tractor supply like I did and in 2 or 3 passes you can turn never broken sod into ready to plant garden.

I don't believe a lightweight middle buster or moldboard plow will work well in that hard clay, I know it won't in mine. We do use a moldboard plow, but it is a heavy three bottom, with the BX, we use a tiller. Even with the tiller, it takes a while to chew down into it. Last year, I ran my L5030 with bb and scarifies down before tilling to break it up.
