JD 2520 Snapped Axle

Well, well, First off I must have missed something???? Don't know what the fuss is about and where is the OP (like someone else asked)?

According to JD specification my JD2320 has a Final Drive, Type Spur Gear, however the 2320 does NOT incorporate a drop axle in the rear such as the 2520 and the 2720. The drop axle is yet another reason I did not elect to purchase a 2520. The drop axle just flat out looks weak to me. From what I understand the drop axle type rear in tractors years past was designed and used in garden/crop cultivation of higher growing type plants. The drop axle in the 2520/2720 and the 4 inch narrower frame compared to the 2320 are questions I still cannot seem to find answers for. Just sayin!

I agree with you 100%, I could never get a good answer to the design either, but I still bought one because I have no plan of abusing the machine. The OP is the only problem I have heard off with a problem all the years this has been in service..The Cub Cadet SC2400 is the same tractor and no reports there of problems.

I need to look for the ignore feature also..

Its not planetary, its a spur gear design.

The final drive in the "hydro" is spur gear in all 2000 series tractors but we are not talking about that gear. The outer ends of the rear (2520/2720) and front (all 2x20) axles are planetary by definition.

This drives me nuts..I went by the Cub cadet dealer and looked at his units and had him price me a trade..He said the SC2400 was the same tractor..Now that I research it more it is not, it is the SX or EX model..Good thing I did not trade with him..

there was a rash of breakages of the top link bracket several years ago. I think that was attributed to using the wrong link hole.

Roy, just wondering which hole I should use on my Kubota, does it matter that much? Is one recommended over the other? I use a weight bucket (for snow removal) and occasionally a post hole digger. thanks.

For light and medium draft loads use the bottom hole. For medium and heavy draft loads use the middle hole. For very heavy draft loads use the top hole. Per JD owner's manual.

Example of a light-medium draft load - landscape rake.

Example of a medium draft load - tiller or box blade.

Example of a very heavy draft load - plow or ripper.

AK answered before I did, but I thought I'd add the picture from the manual.

SRS, if your upper link attach point (on your Kubota) has more then one hole, it should be explained in your manual.

Akfish and Roy, thanks for the info. I'll also check the Kubota manual. Stanley

It sure doesn't look like it in the photo, and I am also 100% certain the front is not planetary. I don't think any compacts use front planetaries, they are all utility sized units. Some orchard tractors use outboard planetaries in the rear and front.

In Kubota they used a planetary final up to the L10 series then went spur, I think the backhoe models still use it too. The smallest M's have it too as they are based off the old L10 series.

Roy, you must have thousands of photos to post, or a pile of manuals. You can always come up with an example. Jy.
