allways wondered if an old corn grinder would work for a chipper/shredded. Found one awile back and passed it up because I wasn't shure.

Yes i put a 1" thread plug in the tank and plan to fill it with water when i get it to my lot. I didn't use sand because i will have to trailer it back and forth from the lot to the house and this way i can take some weight out of it. I think sand would be a better choice as it would weigh a lot more.

Yeah, but he can drain the water out after use...his post did mention that his FEL could barely lift the empty tank. Of course, that doesn't mean his 3PH can't.

When you weigh a gallon of sand, you are weighing rock particles and the air space between them. If the gallon container was somehow filled with pure rock with no air space in it, it would weigh:

density of typical sand particle, mostly silica: 2.65 grams/cubic centimeter (g/cc)
1 gallon = 3785 cc

3785cc x 2.65 g/cc = 10030g = 22 pounds

But sand does have that air space in it, and it's weight will depend how closely packed the sand particles are to each other. A typical density of loose sand is about 1.6 g/cc (called "bulk density," because it includes both the sand particles and the air space). So:

3785cc x 1.6 g/cc = 6,056g = 13.3 pounds.

I know hindsight is always better but I would have staggered the rows. I hope there is no bouncing between the time one row contacts the dirt and then the next row. staggered it would be in constant contact.

Yes, I agree that water would be the best medium all around, but sand would give the most weight per volume.

you are right, there is a slight bounce between rows. . .And i'm mad at my self for not seeing that before i started welding. I was on my 3rd row when it hit me. I,ve only pulled it empty and only about 50'. The bounce isn't that bad but i'm sure after i use it the first day i'll be looking at a way to fix it.

Shredder Thoughts

Would like some thoughts on using the front hub, brake rotor, axle & spindle off a front wheel drive.

In a heavy steel box mount spindle, axle out the back. Weld shredder spikes to rotor and fashion a feeder chute. 5 To 10 HP. engine. Direct drive, chain or belt drive, clutch or no clutch.
