.......the risks involved in identifying the genes enable/encourage the therapies and treatments for the condition. Those risks deserve some reward.

Good Morning Keegs,

I agree it is worthy research and no doubt costly. They do deserve some reward.

However, if a woman in your life is walking around with BRCA-1 and BRCA-2 genes, a patent essentially says Myriad Genetics has rights to them that the woman they reside in does not.

Fast forward to the future. The Acme Gene-o-lator is now available for purchase. The Gene-o-later can alter or remove undesirable genes. Obviously Acme would deserve a patent. Would Myriad Genetics have to grant a woman a license to repair her own genes? What if they refuse or the price is exhorbitant?
Dave.

Morning Dave...it's a really interesting topic. I'm on a tight schedule this morning. I know very little about patent rights not to mention how it relates to a holder's right of refusal.

Some of this might have a bearing on addressing healthcare costs though particularly as it relates to chronic desease.

I did not read this entire thread, just a few posts at the start. Somebody mentioned that we would be able to get affordable insurance for pre-existing illnesses. I heard a newswoman on a morning talk show a few days ago say that people with pre-existing illnesses could get coverage, but not for the pre-existing illness, just whatever else they may need the insurance for. I think she was talking to Harry Smith at the time. I hope I'm not double posting what somebody else said.

" Well, see YOU should have had a senator who could have gotten the "Georgia" exception, like Ben Nelson did for
Nebraska.
C'mon LET"S MAKE A DEAL! " > Yep- that's the problem....but that's OK we have a Governor who is going to file suit to stop this from applying us Georgians ..we'll see how that goes...Living history in the making now..

I find our state's position to be humerous. Our AG is filing suit against the feds and our governor is filing suit against the AG to stop him from filing his suit.

WOW. Just got to the end of this thread. How do I keep finding these threads that take hours to read just a few days worth of posts. Must have something to do with opening threads when I see that dave1949 and FallbrookFarmer are posting on them. :confused2:

Someone posted earlier about COBRA, what is it? I have never seen a change in paying direct vs insurance. Insurance companies always get lower costs than when I have to pay myself.

Mike - I have no doubt the government will run health care and that, to me, is very scary ! Name one thing....Just one, the government has run profitably.

Parts of the TARP program are returning a nice profit BACK to the government. Read the news about the Citi sales. For just one example.

Believe it or not, there is fresh meat in the government that actually thinks and works in the public interest.
