.......the risks involved in identifying the genes enable/encourage the therapies and treatments for the condition. Those risks deserve some reward.

I agree it is worthy research and no doubt costly. They do deserve some reward.
However, if a woman in your life is walking around with BRCA-1 and BRCA-2 genes, a patent essentially says Myriad Genetics has rights to them that the woman they reside in does not.
Fast forward to the future. The Acme Gene-o-lator is now available for purchase. The Gene-o-later can alter or remove undesirable genes. Obviously Acme would deserve a patent. Would Myriad Genetics have to grant a woman a license to repair her own genes? What if they refuse or the price is exhorbitant?
