I just finished nailing the last piece of trim for my pole building. Thought I would post the pictures since I used this forum frequently in the beginning phases of construction. I also thought some people may be interested in the approach I took for insulating and finishing the interior since there seem to be many questions regarding that topic. Please ignore the mess as I am still in the organizing phase moving equipment from one garage to the next. The bikes and tractor will hopefully be relocated to my other garage once it is clean and swept so that will free up much space. For the interior I used 1.5" foam insulation under OSB sheets. I found this to be easier and only cost slightly more then actually framing out the walls with 2x4's. For the ceiling I used plain drywall which will have R-13 fibreglass on top when the funds are acquired. I also decided to install a Hot Dawg 45,000 BTU furnace for the winter months. So far it is working beautifully. For anyone interested total cost between 10 and 11K. I will also post a few pics of the beginning of the project.

Thanks everyone for your help!!!

Rod M.

Looks Great... just in time for winter!

I agree with the others, the building looks very nice. Where do you live? I ask that because where I live we usually have 40+ days when the tmeperature falls below zero.

I live near Harrisburg PA. Usually doesn't get that cold around here...at most a couple nights below zero in the winter.

Nice job, and I almost feel silly for suggesting anything, but... The ceiling is the area most susceptible to heat loss, and therefore is the area that should have the highest R-Value. If you can get blown-in cellulose from Menards and borrow/rent their machine, I bet you'll get a higher R-Value for the dollar.

Thanks for the compliments. My original plan was to go with the blown in insulation which is cheaper anyhow...however, when I drywalled the ceiling I forgot to put those styrofoam channels between the trusses so now it seems that if I were to blow in insulation a lot of it would wind up falling out on the soffit. As far as the R-13 goes I am just trying to find middle ground between cost of insulation and wasting heat. I will only keep the temp slightly above freezing when it is not in use otherwise it will be around 60-70 when I am using the building. Perhaps I should do a more in depth cost analysis. It was funny looking through those photos since you get to see all four Pennsylvania seasons.

You're right, for occasional heating, you're smart not to go overboard. I'm sure when the time comes you'll put in what's best for your budget.

nice shop!
when you put the batts in the ceiling, use unfaced so they can breathe

I am having trouble locating unfaced batts at the local big box hardware stores. All I could find for 24" spacing was R-13 with the Kraft paper. I will have to try some of the more specialized builders stores.

Rodmo: I am envious of your building, but I am curious why you chose not to go with insulated doors from the get go ? Insulated doors are not that much more than single wall. Did you plan to insulate them with expanded polystyrene later ?

Very nice!

looks about 24' by 28'?

does your cost est. include the furnace, wiring, etc?

Yeah...that should include about everything. The structure was 6300, concrete was a little over 2000, furnace and vent pipe were 700, all electric was roughly 700, drywall, insulation and windows ran another 1000. The garage doors are insulated however they are still very thin and incredibly light.

Nice job. Nice canoe too. Did you build it?

I've seen some unfaced R30 at HD about half the price of faced. It is meant to roll out over top of existing attic insulation to add depth. I've been thinking about adding 1.5" in my pole barn walls between the girts.

Rodmo1,
Is that a TR-6 in British Racing Green ?

BTW, nice looking building!

I was just at lowes this afternoon for a few random items and saw they are having 20% off insulation. Unfortunately they only have R-13 faced. Buckeye, I hope you are right about HD I will call them tomorrow to check...hate to spend the extra money if I dont have to.

RobA...I got the canoe from a family friend who wanted more room in their basement. They adopted several kids the other year and lost the free time they once had for projects like that and were unable to finish it. I planned on finishing it this summer, however the moist winter we had last year caused the keel to crack from one end to another before I got the fibreglass on. I am very bitter since now I have to start over with the process of stripping it.

Those are some good eyes Old Path, except it is a TR-4 not a 6 and it is black. I am currently rebuilding the steering since all the old rubber is dryrotted. I am the third generation owner of this car in my family. My granddad bought it new in '61. The best part is it only has 18,000 miles. I only recently replaced the factory tires due to my fear of them blowing out after so many years.

Here's a little "need to know" information on box-store insulation.

They have competitively priced insulation that is specifically R13 or R15 for 2x4 16" on center walls. EVERYTHING else they have is overpriced.

Price out the materials and then call a contractor for a quote. I promise you that your 24" on center rafters will put you into an expensive roll at the depot. Either call a wholesale insulation center yourself, or find a associate that installs for a living. You would not believe how many people can buy the insulation and have it installed by an installer for the same price that you would purchase the materials alone for at a box store.

HD has 9 1/2" thick, 15" wide, 25' unfaced rolls for $9.37 which is 31sf at $.31 a sf
These rolls are meant to be put on top of existing insulation in an attic.

I have been installing 10", 16"w, 4' faced batts, 10 per pack $38.93 which is $.73 sf. Last year this bundle cost $27.19.
