Tractor
None... yet.
How can I convince my Dad that buying a used tractor isn't necessarily buying someone's headaches? He says that he has NEVER had any luck buying anything used, but I have never seen him actually buy anything used. Well, I take that back, he did buy me a used Honda MR250 29 or 30 years ago... and that was a good bike. Do any of you have advise as to how to ease his fears of buying a used tractor, not to mention advise that will help us make sure the used tractor is a good one?

Your dad might be smarter than you think. I have had the most luck buying tractors from the widow or family of a deceased owner. Many times folks dump tractors knowing that it will cost them some cash in the near future if they dont. This is not a problem with a new tractor or one that is being sold for a legit reason.

How many tractors have you purchased over the years from left behind family members?

How can I convince my Dad

That was all I needed to read. You can't and shouldn't try. When someone's made up their mind only they can change it. Since he has said publically he has never had any luck he's just going to be looking for a problem if he gets a used one. If by some chance you do change his mind and something goes wrong then guess who he's blaming? I'd steer clear of this one and let Dad buy a new one or if you do want to continue down this road just give him some general info and but make sure its his decision and his decision alone on a particular tractor.

Best way I can think of is for YOU to buy a good used one and let him see how much you like it and how you never have any trouble with it and then you can GIVE it to him as a Fathers Day gift sometime. :D

Your father could be right, but he could also be wrong. Tractors last for a long time. It's not like buying a used car. Talking with the owner can give a lot of insight on the condition of the tractor. I'm not saying that you should believe what all tractor owners tell you, but when talking you can get a gut feel if what he is telling you is truthful. If you have doubts, have an independent knowledgeable tractor person check out the tractor. If it's legit the owner should have no problem with someone checking out the tractor. Let your dad be in on the whole process. He might change his mind or you might find your dad was more right. This whole process might give you and your father a bond that you might not have had before. Enjoy the adventure.;)

forget the convincing part.. lets move on to application and budget.

what are you wanting to do.. what is your budget.

are you mechanically inclined and able to make small to medium repairs on your own, plus regualr and preventative maintenance. do you own a set of tools ( sockets, wrenches, screwdrivers, various pliers, hammers and mauls and drifts.. etc.. )?

Like any other purchase, to be an informed tractor buyer you have to do your homework.

First, you need to think through the uses you think you have now for a tractor.

Then expand your time frame 5 years and figure out what new uses you might have.

Once you have your arms around these uses, then figure out the type and size of implements you'll need.

Now you're ready to consider the tractors that satisfy your needs (horsepower, 2WD or 4WD, gas or diesel, FEL?, hydrostatic or gear tranny, etc).

Finally, start looking for used tractors (dealers lots, eBay, craigslist, local classifieds, local auctions, estate sales, etc). You can get ballpark prices for used tractors by investing $20 for a copy of the tractor blue book.

Amazon.com: The Official Tractor Blue Book 2009: Mike Hall: Books

Don't know what your budget is, but I'd recommend starting with used tractors less than 5 years old and less than 1000 engine hours. A 30-50 hp tractor diesel with 1000 hours is just getting broken in (assuming regular maintenance schedule is followed faithfully) and should be good for 4000-5000 hours before needing engine/tranny overhaul. You can find many late model used tractors whose owners have put less than 100 hours per year on the engine clock.

Good luck.

I have had good luck buying used tractors.........you just have to be careful and ask alot of questions. If the seller does not want to be honest with you then move on......usaully they are trying to hide something. I agree with Soundguy.......budget and small repairs can make for a great bargin. I have bought two used tractors over the years......done some repairs and have just resold one and I am now looking for another........used.......tractor.;)

Holy crap! He might well have talked with you at some point. Perhaps (more than likely) not about tractors but it is certainly possible that he has talked to you about something else. He is from Warren PA. also and, like me, has the gift of gab.:D

Thanks for the advise y'all.

To answer a few questions, he is looking for a compact tractor with a front loader and a backhoe that is powerful enough for the loader to lift say 1000lbs and lift high enough to dump into a pickup at the least and preferably into a dump truck. He is about to retire (Friday) and will be using the tractor around his 18 or so acres in a fairly hilly area of Warren PA. His budget I would say would be between $10,000 and $15,000. He is NOT mechanically inclined and is also debilitated by a bad back and COPD. His BIL down the road is very mechanically inclined and willing to fix things that need to be fixed, so I would imagine that assuming that the repair isn't overly technical, my uncle Jerry would handle that.

The bottom line is that he has put off buying a tractor for decades becuase he can't justify the cost in his mind when he knows that it will sit dormant MUCH more than it will be used. This is why I brought up the used option in the first place. I think that he ought to live a little and buy the tractor that he has always wanted, even if that means sending the money on a new one. However, if in order to justify to himself the money spent he would need to buy a used one I am all for that too. I just wish he would stop worrying about leaving an inheritance and start using his assets to make his retirement a good one.

Not sure how to convince your Dad. I have had good luck with used equipment. I recently bought my first tractor used and have had good luck. I took a friend who is JD mechanic to look at the tractor and it met his approval. Four years ago I bought a used JD lawnmower and it has served me well. My Dad recently bought a JD 425 AWS mower used and got a great deal. My point is that one can save money and get great equipment used if they are willing to look. Of course there is nothing wrong with buying new.

Getting a compact with loader to lift 1000# is doable.. just won't be the smaller compacts.

getting one to dump into a pickup truck bed will be doable with the 'regular' size compact as well.

Getting one to dump into a standard 18yd mini-wheeler.. well.. that will be a problem.. unless he builds a ramp to park the truck next to and then drives up the ramp to dump.

I'd guess you would have to get into a big utility or small ag size tractor to get the height needed to dump into a dump truck.

But to do all of this with a FEL & Backhoe new for < $15,000. Probably not doable.

Well I didn't see that one coming. Tell him congrats on his retirement and to enjoy it!!

The problem I have with used compact tractors is finding one worth buying at a decent price. I bought one at what would have been a decent price, but it turned out to have intentionally hidden damage.

The low hour well maintained machines seemed to be priced high enough it makes one wonder if it isn't really better to spend a few thousand more for a new machine with a warranty.

I agree with your Dad....my first tractor was used and a nightmare. More time was spent fixing it than using it. I've had no issues with my new tractors outside of wear and tear replacements

Here in Pa where the poster is talking about I've found few loader tractors used that are in a decent price range. It seems that they sell very well around here and when looking for one you either pay more for a used one that isn't far off from a new priced one or you just buy a new one. Just the way it is here. Even just over the line in Ohio has a tendency to be less expensive and more choices available. Take a look at Pittsburgh's listings on Craigslist. You'll see what i mean.
