I think my scariest moment was when I was about 18 (around 1995/1996). My dad bought an old Farmall C with the tricycle-style front wheel to use out on our place in the country. That thing was a pain. It's electric start had been converted from 6V to 12V and the new starter had enough torque to strip the teeth on the flywheel, thus turning it back to a crank-start. Another wonderful feature was that the PTO was connected directly to the rear axle....

So one day I'm riding the Farmall running the brush hog while my dad is tending a burning brush pile. All of a sudden the front tricycle wheel completely disappears into either a collapsed gopher mound or large ant bed. The drop threw me hard against the steering wheel and I instinctively slammed my foot down on the clutch. Unfortunately the brush hog was still running at full speed and the momentum of that drove the rear wheels forward. My brain was in high gear and time was moving in slow motion. Just when I thought the front wheel was going to sheer off the whole tractor lurched as the wheel popped up out of the hole and the tractor did a wheelie. The front end slammed back down and bounced four or five times before my foot found the brake and the momentum from the shredder ran out. All of that happened in about 15 or 20 seconds.

And of course a tractor that old didn't have a seat belt so the whole time I was primarily concentrating on trying to stay in the seat. Had a nasty steering-wheel shaped bruise on my chest. Doctor said I was lucky I didn't crack a rib.

We finally got rid of that tractor when it got to where it would accumulate water in the gas tank overnight. Nearly broke my wrist twice crank starting it.

The first time I drove our little Mitsubishi BD2G Dozer over a small ridge and the front end pivoted down rather suddenly was a bit of an "Oh Crap!" moment. Of course, I'm used to that now so I don't even flinch anymore.... Unless, of course, I happen to be backing when it happens and I'm not expecting it.

I was pulling a log out of the woods with a B2410.
I was chained to hooks on the FEL. The log was digging into the dirt while backing up. I lifted the loader up, to lift the log while backing.
All was good until I had to turn. Now I have a angle pull from a lifted loader bucket. I could feel the back tire come up quickly. I stopped with the tire in the air, so I could think of my next move.

28 yrs ago I was digging a basement outside of town about a mile or two from the gravel pit the company I was working for was based out of. It was a saturday morning and I was in early and finishing up the last of the job, the boss needed the truck and trailer and figured I could just drive the tractor in when I finished so he came and got it. On the way decided to stop at my house and pick up my 18 month old daughter as he thought it was fun to have her around sometimes. He left her with me and she soon fell asleep curled up on the floor of the cab. I finished the hole and headed into town driving slow down the gravel trying not to wake her up, got to the last hill a mighty big one and as I was headed down saw a vehicle coming up so I was paying attention to the road passed the other vehicle and all the sudden a BIG lurch to the side My little daughter woke up, grabbed the closest hand hold and proceeded to swing the hoe sideways at about 15 mph by the time my hand slammed the loader bucket down sheering the cutting edge and the bottom of the bucket off I think there was 2 ft of air under one back tire.
lesson learned if they are too young to know what a lever is they are too young to be in there LOL
that was a PUKER moment for sure
not to mention a half a day rebuilding the loader bucket

NOt sure if I posted this on this forum before or not. But here is a picture of my pulling a tree down onto my ROPS. Seemed perfectly logical at the time that just like kicking a leg out from under a table I'd pull the rootball right out from under the tree.

Bottom line is, we all make stupid deicisions at one point or the other. I was in a rush, I was tired and I was cleary not thinking.

I got lucky and will not get myself in such a situation again.

well this one isnt about a tractor but it is about telling tales on oneself
a few years ago I had a late 70s Mercury grand Marquis Broughm fanciest car I have ever had the bells and whisltes blow away even my town cars in these later years.
the Shifter cup in the steering column broke so you could not shift it at all of course it did it at the drive up mail drop at the post office at 4:30 with the wife driving.
a frantic call or two later I get there look sheepishly at the traffic jam my car is causing crawl under the hood and find nuetral as she had shut it off waiting, had her start it and hold the brakes while I shifted it in gear and followed her home. now the good part
3 or 4 days later get the new shifter cup go out bymyself to put it in its raining no problem I'll start it in park put on the brake open the hood put it in gear then drifve it into the garage and replace the parts.
now remember its December I live in ND its cold as all get out.
I start it up fast idle is on a little no problem I just did the brakes they are tight as can be it will hold that 460 from a dead start no matter what.
I get out open the hood reach down fiddle with the shift rod pup it in gear. now how many of you ever heard of an automatic e brake release in 1978 guess what it had one
popped it in gear break snapped off the 460 at high idle had those tires spinning and squeeling knocked me on my kiester slams the neighbors little compact pickup parked 30 ft in front of it and just takes it for a ride here I am
my pride hurting from the landing the neighbors looking out the windows my car squeeling the tires down the street and me running to catch up to the mercury with that lil chevy pickup on its hood
we all lived neighbor got a paint job free from ours truly my boys learned a lot about body work

but I sure wasnt laughing that day
