BX 24 Work Rates

I have a BX24 and have been asked if I would do jobs for pay from these people.

These jobs could be tilling,moving large amounts of dirt,putting in swails,digging up tanks,rocks,minor excavating to repair foundations or basement walls,digging trenches etc.

My question is how do I come up with a price to do these things?

What should I expect to earn per hour?

Rates very around the country. Id try to find out what others in YOUR area are getting for rates[those with scuts] Mabey start out a little cheaper until youve hooked a few customers.The important thing to remember your making the payments so dont do it for nothing,or your letting folks take advantage of you in my opinion.They better be next of kin to do that
Not to be negative ,but if one job goes bad for what ever reason,THEY MIGHT OWN YOUR TRACTOR AND THEN SOME,if your not insured.Be real careful we live in a sue happy nation.

I set a rate for me and my BX24 doing those same tasks at $50 per hour. I also add a travel fee of $25 for any work outside a 15 mile radius of my home base. I really don't want to travel much farther than 15 miles to do this work, but will if the client wants to pay more for travel. I got quite a bit of work last spring/summer with that rate, and most jobs were completed in about 4-6 hours. A couple of them went full 8-10 hour days and one was a 2 day affair. In all cases but one, the client was satisfied. The only one that wasn't was a clock watcher who got quite frustrated by the fact that the machine had some limits and could not move the "mountains" he may have expected...he cut me off at 4 hours and was complaining as he wrote the $200 check...oh well!??

I charge $35 per hour. I let folks know when the job they ask me to do needs bigger machinery. I always want to make the customer happy that way I'm happy. I charge a float fee of $35 per hour as well.

I have been wanting to take on some side work as well, but i am always reluctant because oft he liability issues and just some people you just cant make happy. But pick your customers and the good jobs you want. As for money, I would just estimate the amount of time to do and charge what you think is honest for yuo and the customer. Contractors charge rediculous here in nj, so under bidding is not a problem here.

I've thought the same thing about possibly doing some outside work (pardon the pun)...Not sure if it's already been shown on here but a good starting point monies wise is to go to your local "Craigslist" and type in the info you're going to do and see what others are charging in your neck of the woods.

I've thought about doing this but I'd have to buy a truck and a trailer and purchase insurance.
I would only want to do it part time and that won't even pay for the truck, trailer and the insurance.
To me it just wouldn't be worth it.

Check your local laws and or codes, some places you need a operators license to work with a machine .
There are dif types of insurance for digging and depth where I am.
I charge 25% less per hr than a bh for my bx24, for day rates try charging what a it would cost to rent a the same size machine for the day with a trailer . Last year i bent a $400 thumb doing a $200 granite block job.

I know you guys are talking about liability insurance for your work, but with purchasing the BX24 through the kubota credit you HAVE to buy their insurance on the machine. But it was only $400 for the the 42 months of the interest free loan and kubota says it covers the machine any where, and during tow. So at least i don't have anything to worry about for the next 42 mo. So if something happens in tow or at someelses place its covered.

Speaking of insurance I was just schooled by State Farm as to my options as a homeowner operator. Basically on my property I'm covered for liability, physical, and theft through my homeowners. But leave the property for a family freebee and there is no liability protection whatsoever. The friend or family member will be protected by their homeowners but not the machine owner (me). I can buy physical coverage to protect me from theft, fire, falling off the trailer, etc... but I could have a problem if it were to be stolen from a legitimet construction site. That being said the $200 quicky job or worse that freebee could be very costly if a neighbor kid jumps on the machine during a lunch break or you swing the boom into your neighbors day laborer he found at the 7-11 that morning!

What i meant is in order to get approved for their loan you HAVE to have it insured! Either through them or your own and have proof. If its stloen from you they have nothing to reposess if you stop paying. And who is going to pay for something they dont have? So you dont have to have insurance either, but they wont give you a load either!

Having said that, no other insurance company, home owners or not will not give the same coverage for the same costt. Infact with less coverage it will still be more, especially in NJ. $400 for 42 mo is an unbelievable rate!
