Yep, Chris, that gettin' trapped between the doors is a nuisance. And my parents' vehicles stayed outside, but I'm like you; both of mine are in the garage. I briefly considered buying a full size van, but it was too tall to fit into my garage, and even though I have a second driveway, I did not want to leave it sitting out.

I agree with gemini5362. I've had several extended cab pickups from my current Ford Ranger and an F150, to two 3500 Chevy's; one SRW and one dually. They serve the purpose, but if you're buying new and have a choice . . . if you get the extended cab, there will be times you wish you'd gotten the crew cab, but if you get the crew cab, you'll never wish for the extended cab.

I'm not trying to sound like a smart***, but actually, we probably will. We go through a path that our ex. cab barely makes through. A quad would never think about it. And when you're in a tight parking lot. Mostly length issues. We do have times we would like a quad cab. Like going shopping. I do understand where everyone is coming from, but a quad cab really isn't for us.

Well, Kyle, that's the reason they make both types; one size doesn't always fit all.:D

You got that right Bird. I understand how everybody likes the quad cab, but I really don't think it fits us.

Diamondpilot,
I agree for the few more $, it's worth getting a 3500 SRW. However, I've been looking at them and noticed, GM lists the GVW for the 2500 as 9200# and the 3500 as 9900#. The DRW 3500 is 11,400#. Where are you getting the 1100# more figure from. I was hoping for a little more out of the 3500SRW that 700 payload. Payload was an issue for me recently when I wanted to pick up a pallet of belgium blocks. My Chevy HD was rated for 8900#, which gave me a payload of about 3000#. That was pushing it for me.
The DRW2500 is an impressive beast, but I can't convince the boss at home.
Farmboy is scaring me. How does a kid like you know about accidents with a DRW because of the rear width. That's the kinda secret we take to the grave.
There's a 3500SLT GMC on the local lot. Sticker is $54K,can get it for $40k. I wish GM would allow me to cash in all my GM card points. That would just be enough of a discount to make it a deal I can't refuse.

I stand corrected. I should have verified my numbers. I was using the numbers off of my friends truck and my neighbors truck. My friend has a 2007 Classic 2500 Dmax and the GVWR is 8,800# and my neighbor has a 2007 SRW 3500 Classic Dmax and the GVWR is 9,900# That is where I got the 1,100# difference.

I guess the weights have changed on the 2008's. Sorry

Well, it's just common sense. The rear of those DRW fenders is probably the most common hit spot on a DRW p/u. Don't let my age fool anyone. I'm not trying to sound cocky, but I've been doing research since I was about 6. I probably know just about as much or more than most people on here. Again, I'm not trying to sound cocky, nor am I trying to offend anyone.

Your are right Kyle, DRW trucks around here get pretty beat up due to the narrow country roads. I drove a Chevy 4x4 dually back in 1997-1999 for work and it was horrible. I could not get into a drive up at a fast food restaurant or bank, a parking spot, had to get in the ditch to pass a car, and stunk in the snow and mud even though it was a 4x4 and had a 454 I think.

Have they stopped letting you cash them all in. When I bought my truck we cashed in all of our GM points what is the limit ?

LOL

There is research and there is doing it. I admire your research and your ideas but I have grandkids your age and there is no amount of research anywhere on the planet that can make up that much difference.

Let me give you a for instance.

You can research getting shot at. You can listen to it in surround sound with a whole gaggle of speakers. Neither of them even begin to prepare you for the real thing.

On the other hand you have your ideas about what you want well thought out and that is a very good way to start. One thing I dont know but I am curious about. Go to a dealers lot with a tape measure and see what the difference is between an extended cab and a quad cab. I dont think it is enough that you would notice it driving on country roads.

I have 2 extended cab Ford Superdutys and I hate them. You go to Lowes to buy something and you get back to the truck and you open both doors and you are trapped between the 2 doors, your truck, and the car next to you all while your cart is out in nowhere land. The Titan is the only truck I have seen where the extended cab door folds all the way, 180 deg, against the bed to address this problem

The only reason I have them is a Super Crew will not fit in my garage and I have kids so I need a place to haul them. I refuse to leave my vehicles in the drive. I guess I am spoiled but my parents always keep everything in the garage and so do I. 2 go in the garage at night and 2 go in the pole barn. I do have a 2007 F-150 4x4 Super Crew and with a short bed it will fit in the garage.

Chris

Actually the new body style GM's extended cab rear doors open a wee bit (a degree or 2) further than the Nissans.

Diamondpilot,
Just wanted to be sure that I understood the numbers. The SRW gives you an additional 700# over the 2500 and the DRW gives you an additional 1500# over the SRW.

Farmboy,
Your age does fool us. You are very knowledgeable on several big guy topics. I hope my 4 year old learns as quickly as you did. All this knowledge you have will serve you well as you get older. You have the information to make smart decisions. Being that we can only make decisions on the information at hand, you are way ahead of the game.

Gemini,
There are redemption allowances on the GM Platinum card. When I first got the GM card about 15 years ago there was a $500 max on earnings per year and $3500 on redemption. So it took you 7 years to max out. They changed my card a few years back and gave me unlimited earnings per year, but set redemption limits. Currently, on the full size trucks, it's $1500. I'm sitting on about $5000, so the $1500 leaves me a bunch sitting in the account.

Not really 100% sure about the GM trucks but that sounds about right. Again these weights are not tow rating increases but payload increases.

I do know the Fords numbers and they are as follows: F-250 4x4 GVWR 10,000# F-350 4x4 SRW GVWR 11,500# so there is a 1,500# increase, and F-350 4x4 Dually GVWR 13,000# so again a 1,500# increase.

Easy solution just buy three new GM vehicles :)

If you have GM points make sure they are still there. After HSBC took over the GM cards they cancelled the points on some of the cards if they weren't being used enough. SWMBO had one for her business with a balance of points, and then switched to another banks card with a cash kick back. She pays the balance off monthly. When we went to purchase our last vehicle an '08 GM in March HSBC stated they had replaced her card with one that only gave a 2% kickback towards a new GM vehicle instead of the old 5% and that the balance of points was not carried forward.

we've gotten a bid from Ford as well. We really would like to stay away from Ford for political reasons, but we got a good bid. It's a 2008 supercab, diesel, auto(would rather have an Allison), 4x4, white, XLT, F-250. They look the best out of the new trucks, and it's on the lot. It's a little more $$$ than the Chevy quote, but it has a special package that gives it a 10,000 gvw. We may just do it. Sorry Builder, but I'm sure Diamond Pilot is happy.;):D

We would look into Dodge, we love Cummins, but the problems with the 6.7, the fact that it doesn't look quite as nice as the other 2(except the dually), and it costs more turns us away.

Dad's first truck was a Ford gas. Then had a Dodge with a Cummins when it first came out, loved it. Then he got a '91 Cummins and hated it. Then a '94 Ford, auto, gas, supercab-worked for him until he got his '03 Chevy, built the same. It still works for our company. Then our '03 Chevy as mentioned. It has gas, auto, ext. cab, long bed, 4x4. This would be our first Ford diesel at all with a family.

Buy whatever makes the most sense for you and puts the most money in your pocket. At least you're buying American.

However, I would add that you are buying a truck with an engine that's being replaced next year. And with your whopping 10K GVW, you're also getting a whimpy 10.5" l/s rear that's pretty worthless compared to a 11.5" GM with Eaton G-80 locker. IMO, the Allison transmission alone makes the GM worth 2 grand more than the Ford.

Good luck with the F-250!
