I have seen all kinds of posts about how to fix tractors, or what tractors to buy, or whether or not Harbor Freight tools are a good thing to buy. I was reading a post someone was answering for a new tractor owner and I wondered, what tools or equipment have the most of us felt was something we do not know how we could live without when it comes to working on or using our tractors. In another post I mentioned that an Air compressor is something I consider mandatory. I also think an air powered impact wrench is something that I would not imagine not having. I have several others but am curious to see what other people find the most useful.

I suppose it depends on what kind of work you intend to do, and how much work your tractor will require. Beyond those considerations, mostly just car maintenance stuff. I'd put a good floor jack pretty high on the list. Of course, socket sets including larger sizes for some of the bigger hardware on tractors. Check also SAE vs. metric as a lot of these machines are all metric.

I've been fortunate in that I haven't had to do much wrenching on my tractor. And thankfully, nothing related to the diesel systems as I don't have much know-how there!

a lot depends on budget and space. I have actually found that a hydraulic press comes in handy. If you are a klutz like me you wind up bending things. It is nice to be able to take them off take them to the press and straighten them.

The one thing I use the most is a 12" Crescent wrench. I carry 2 with me all the time. I can tighten or remove just about anything on my tractor. Another thing I find extremly handy is a 99 piece socket set from Sears.

Torque wrench.

Extremely handy and necessary.

Home Depot now sells a crescent wrench - ratcheting style. Gonna pick up 1 of each size, they work great adjusting the 3PT links.

A cell phone. I won't use my tractor without it. I am usually alone when on the tractor and if anything would ever happen, and I'm able to use it, a cell phone can summon help. Of course you have to have reception for it to have any value.

14mm, 7/8" and crescent wrench is all I have in my pouch except when servicing, then the list gets bigger.

If you have the option of a Simplex jack over the hyrdraulic floor jack, take it as long as the size fits under your axles. I have a 10 ton Simplex and it fits right under the axles on my JD and it is never low on oil, never too much weight for it,(longer handle equals more capacity) and you don't have to worry about leaving it out in the rain a time or two.
A pair of vice grips, an electric impact if you don't have enough air(1/2" drive) and a ratchet strap to reseat the tires when you have a slow leaker and the bead comes unseated.

Did anyone mention a GREASE GUN???

There is no such thing as "Tools a Tractor owner must have":p

There are some which would be handy but these vary as to the use and type of the tractor.:D

One type tool fits all is pure conqueror!

Hey, sometimes the only way to conquer something is to keep hammering at it:rolleyes:

D'ja ever notice that when your only tool is a hammer, all your problems start to look like nails!

(I can't take credit for that quote)

Another great one from my mother, though she can't take credit for it...

"When something moves, and shouldn't... use duct tape. If it doesn't move and should... use WD40"

I'm pretty sure those are the only two "tools" in her toolkit.

To have on tractor at all times - A couple of cresent wrenches, various wrenches, a pry bar to help hook up 3pt equipment, hammer, screw drivers, and extra pins. Oh and of course duct tape.

To have in garage to work on tractor - Impact wrench(electric or air), of course and air compressor, good jack(and jack stands), wood blocks, good socket set and torque wrench. Long pipe to help with stubborn bolts, grease gun, large hammer, never seize, locktite, filter wrench, and a large capacity oil pan.

Like someone else said a press is nice but a hammer does alright. Welder, torch, plasma cutter and such would be nice to fix or make modifications, but not a must have for most.

Cant think of anything else right now.

My li'l SWMBO has just started to believe that a 70 or so amp plasma cutter is an urgent necessity for anyone with a tractor and more than one implement.

So PLEASE don't say anything about little things, like cell phones and crescent wrenches.

I thought I was stretching things when I suggested I need a 50 amp plasma cutter. I will tell you the way i hinted to my wife that I wanted a welder for christmas.

I got a miller catalog then went to the page that had the welder I wanted. I highlighted that welder. Then I took an ink pen and made a circle out of asterisks around the welder. Then I took paper clips and put paper clips around the whole page. Then I ripped all the other pages except that one out of the catalog. I then put the catalog on her pillow.
