Your towing rigs and trailers

canyou get the mega ramps with the drive over fender? I called two ish years ago and spoke to someone who said that you could get the drive over fenders with regular stand up ramps or the standard 82" between fenders and mega ramps. if you can that's awesome and i will be looking into doing the same thing. also do you have enough space under the bushhog to flip the ramps over and lay them flat?

I’m not sure, they don’t offer it on the website but PJ, Sure-Trac and a few others make that same style of trailer. Sure-Trac has those smaller mega ramps, they are only about 2ft long, I think I could lift the bush hog high enough or pull the tractor far enough forward or backwards to close the mega ramps, couldn’t with the larger mega ramps.

My buddy has a 10k 18ft sure Trac, it’s been a **** good trailer so far, I borrow it every now and then, between us we have hauled a lot of stuff on that trailer. Based on that I would have confidence buying Sure-Trac. The only thing I don’t care for is the drive over deck trailer sure-Trac makes is a smooth steel with grip tape, most others are diamond plate there. Not sure how long grip tape will last and have to be reapplied.

I didn稚 plan to haul with weight on the fender. I figure if I back the Massey 98 up on the trailer I can better balance the load. The rest of the tractors fit in between fenders. Well my Bush Hog won稚 it痴 7ft wide.

Makes sense regarding balance. I had Diamond C custom build me a full-width 14.9K GVWR drive over fender LPX recently. I did electric over hydraulic disc brakes on it as well, which I highly recommend. I'm setting it up with a small knuckle boom crane and also a hydraulic winch, so I had them add a Honda hydraulic power-pack to it. They will build whatever you want, but of course a custom trailer costs more than a normal production unit.

I have to haul my M59 with the loader over the front to balance on my 20’ trailer. It goes on my 24” better. IMG_9144.JPG

Between harvest and the local fires, it's covered in dust/ash and tucked into a corner at the moment - not a good picture spot. When I start mounting the crane and winch this fall I'll take some pictures. So far the crane is on a pallet sitting on the deck, as is the winch. The crane hydraulically rotates, extends, lifts and has a hydraulic winch on it. Going to be a challenge to mount the control valves and all the hoses in a way that doesn't look like a messy yard sale. I think I will make the outriggers manual. Should be a fun project if I ever get around to it.

I would love to see it once it's finished...

Well 800 lbf-ft of torque is nothing to sneeze at. The beauty of a well calibrated diesel is that you can just sit there pumping away at full load. I'd like to feel what pulling a 48k lb load feels like.... Your 21k tare weight is more than I've ever hauled loaded, lol.

Nice load! What are your axle gears?

Actually the cab/chassis is less than standard output, but yes they still pull good.

C/C is 360/800

SO is 370/850

HO is 400/1000

High output wouldnt live as long in my application
Most all chassis have reduced output for hard, commercial use.

It pulled it a lot easier than I thought. Truck feels like it could have GCWR of 45-46,000 no problem. Only time it felt like it was straining was when I had to start the load from a dead stop up a fairly steep incline up onto the scale.

So last week I traded my 2016 2500 Sprinter for a 2020. The 16 was a 4 cyl...and was a nice rig that got 24-25 mpg ..but it was at 70k miles and that's about when I get rid of the vans. New one is a 6 cyl 4x4 that I'm going to use as a tow vehicle for a toy hauler. I'm looking for something now that is in the 6-6500 pound area with a garage big enough for a big Harley.

Exactly, they know that most users of 2500/3500 diesel pickups put most of their miles on with very little load. They are not often run hard for long periods.

Having said that, the last 3500 we bought as a pickup, not a CC as I wanted the extra power if I needed it. We use it for deliveries with our 32' 25.9k dually trailer. We are tagged at 40k GCW, but are seldom over 32k. It does remarkably well. We do have electric over hydraulic disc brakes on the trailer as my thinking is that a 3500 is a little light on stopping power when loaded to the max. I need the trailer to fully contribute in the braking area. I can control the issue of taking off slowly and being gentle on the truck, but I can't control the need to make an emergency stop.

MB finally upped their towing capacity? What's the capacity on the 6 cyl diesel?
Their old & anemic 3.8k~4.5k capacity is why many went to Ford Transits able to tow 6.8k~7k.

The Sprinters are all 5K towing capacity , Unless you get a 3500 with dual rears and then its 7500. ..Like you said, not very much weight capability, But if I need to tow heavy I can use my F350 or 450...or even the 150...Im not short on vehicles here. The van will work out well so the dog can travel inside it as well as any other crap we want to put inside.

I thought of doing the 3500 pickup with 1000ftlbs, removing bed and installing an aluminum flatbed, I felt like while towing over 40,000lbs, I might run out of rear spring, axle or tire load capacity. I also like the extra braking capacity on the 5500 and the 4.88 gearing. The high capacity 43,000lb towing package made it an easy decision. I also like the 19.5 tires and the extra 19,500GVWR.
GM also offered a 3500 dually with a GCWR of 40,000lbs.
No doubt the pickups with 1000ftlbs must be sick fun to drive.

With enough gears you can pull anything. I’d definitely rather have the considerably heavier duty 5500 over a 3500. How many speed is the trans? 800 foot pound should still do a good job.

6 speed transmission
More gears in the lighter trucks
ThE Cummins never runs out of power on me, even fully loaded. In line 6 torque feels stronger than V8 torque an does it on lower RPM
