Your towing rigs and trailers

New 16ft PJ I picked up today! I've been waiting a month for it due to manufacturing backlog, and it took a few days for the dealer to order/install the winch I asked them to add. Electric brakes on 5k axles, Heavy Duty ramp option, and SuperWinch 8500lb winch up front.

That looks like a monster winch! What is the capacity? Bigger than I would expect to see for pulling equipment up onto the trailer.

It's a 9500lb winch. Yes, it's overkill, but it's what they ordered. They charged $625 for the winch, marine grade deep cycle, battery box, wiring, and building the mount from scratch so I have no complaints. Especially since they originally told me $650 for an 8500lb model.

Just went this weekend and graded my elderly cousins drive way.

About 1/4 mile or so driveway. Bed is river rock. So spoke with his sister for crushed limestone for a permanent solution.
Anyways, here is my rig getting ready to set up for work.

How do you like that winch? I bought what appears to be the same unit (Superwinch) but have not had reason to use it yet. I built my mount with a receiver hitch so I can use it with my pickup and also on my trailer. It is heavy! 95# before the mounting.

It worked great the one time I've used it so far. Still thinking about welding some D-rings so I can shackle pulleys to change direction if I want, or to pull something back off the trailer. However, that will be a summer project I think. Day 2 of owning the trailer has it sitting at a friend's apartment so they can unpack the van I towed for them before we take it to a scrap yard to get cash for another car. I also want to figure out a way to cover it to keep salt and sand off it.

I thought about mounting mine permanently on my gooseneck trailer but decided to go the receiver route. I keep it in my shop and it will fit in the locking chainbox on my trailer when not in use.

How is attached at the trailer? Removable would be nice, but I didn't really think about it at the time. I've never needed a winch for anything before. They installed a battery box to run it, and I don't have anything wired to the back of the truck that could handle the draw.

I’ll get a picture of the mount on my trailer tomorrow. It’s in a barn and the lighting isn’t very good.

Here is a picture. Sorry about the poor quality - I keep it in a barn and it has been overcast the last few days. Anyway, it is a piece of 7 inch channel with a receiver welded to it. There is a ring welded on if I want to double head it with a snatcblock. The channel is bolted to the neck of the trailer.2ED7C019-F3EE-492F-97D3-B5164922D8EB.jpeg

i did something similar though i mounted mine higher to clear more of the deck.

i can also attach it to my truck

on my bumper pull i have d rings for toe downs that double for the snatch blocks.

I debated mounting mine higher on the neck. Ultimately, will need to see how I like the way it works and can always modify it. Front mount on the pickup would be nice!

Yep, I installed a receiver hitch on the front:

Put a chain around a long dead tree and hooked up the winch line:

It broke when started pulling:

Pulled out the rest of it:

Good idea about the D ring for a snatch block!

Nice! I like it. Simple and effective. I'm trying to decide it I want to weld a D-ring at the end of the dove tail for a snatch block to pull things off the trailer or not, if I can rig up some sort of crane for the heavy things I get asked to help move, or a way to hold the rear ramp out a bit further for added clearance.

Here's a picture of the towing setup I use for big stuff... that trailer at one point in it's life had 3 axles (that's why the fenders look goofy), now it has two 8000lb axles, about 2500lb of trailer... that Ford 8600 on the back wasn't tied down at that point (my brother for reference... we didn't have that many bananas on hand... :)). That was the biggest load I've ever towed since the tractor was 12k pounds! Was only 30 miles from the destination and didn't go over 50... I think the 10 weights that came on the front of the tractor were in the bed, but it towed great...

Since then the F350 ('97 crew cab long bed F350 with 7.3L PSD and ZF5) has gotten F250 blocks in the rear lowering it 2" and I took the overload spring out of the front leaf pack. One of the many previous owners put a 4" lift on the thing, the 35" tires fit just fine and with a camper I wanted shorter, it tows and drives MUCH better being 2" shorter...

Nice. I got my 16' PJ Utility about a year and a half ago. I love it. Almost pulled the trigger on a number of other trailers before I found the one I bought. When I think about that, I feel like I really dodged a bullet. My PJ trailer has some trailer well thought-out features.

Can you take a picture of how you hooked up the equalizer hitch to the trailer. Most 14k trailers have too big of frames to mount a typical equalizer hitch chain grab. This may be the first one I've seen with that hitch set up. I like it.
