Your towing rigs and trailers

In the early '70's I was LEO in Southern California. One afternoon while writing a report a red and black '69 Road Runner with 440 Hemi burnt rubber in front on me. Of course I went after him. Knew that my 383 Polaris was no match for the RR but he turned into an apartment complex. Turns out the RR was stolen the night before from an Anaheim used car lot. I lusted after that car. I hope the charge of Grand Theft Auto was worth that joy ride. LOL

Not trying to be to ****, but the 440 was a wedge engine and the hemi was a 426.

I was told by a guy that does alot of towing across states that the FORD 6.7L PSD (for 2011, it was rated at 390HP/735ft/tq) performs head & shoulders better than the 7.3L or any previous gas/diesel engine. Just 2 cents worth......

My neighbor tows 40k miles a year for work... started with a 7.3L then went to Chevrolet, back to the 6.7L and now with a gas GMC

Out of all the rigs the 7.3 had the least grunt... but it was also zero issues... the 3 that came after have all had serious, costly and time consuming warranty issues.

The gasser had a total engine and transmission replacement at under 5k miles... being in limp home mode crossing the SF Bay Bridge twice and once down I5 in the first 6 weeks made for one unhappy customer... since the power plant swap two years ago all has been good.

I liked my 7.3 but Ford really missed the boat with the E4OD/4R100 transmission. 1st gear was really geared high (numerically low) compared to more modern transmissions. I think 1st was around 2.71:1 compared to 3.11:1 for 1st and 2.22:1 for 2nd on the 5r110 in later trucks. Made for a sluggish feeling truck off the line compounded by turbo spoil lag. Wasn't hard to turn up the power in them though which helped.

I borrowed the 7.3 for a 800 mile trip towing a 6k trailer in one very long day.

Nothing bad to say about the truck... got on the Highway 5, set the cruise for 60... never missed a beat.

I was going to take my smaller 1/2 ton gas pickup and my neighbor came over and with his keys and said I should take his Diesel... said why go over the mountains maxed out with a 15 year old truck.

It was very nice of him and his wife as I never asked.

I help here and there when he has some tractor work... mostly leveling a pad for water tanks and such.

Local builder, it started out 16' w/3500# axles & slide out ramps. When I brought Dad's JD 720D home, I took it back & had the 6,000# axles, wheels &tires put under it (frame is plenty heavy enough). Next, after cancer treatments, the ramps got too heavy for me, so back to the builder for a 5' ramp-gate. When I got the finish mower I have now, I needed more room, so back to the builder for a 2' dovetail & shorter ramp-gate:
