Yes sorry, 400 was for two batteries the solenoid and a new belt. I figured with the age of the batteries, and being so low on voltage I just replace them.

it’s one of those things were I feel I shouldn’t cheap out

$400 - what is a freezer full of meat worth ? Easy call, not something I'd cheap-out on either. Storm season is a good motivator, but some of my longest outages here were during good weather..... Go Figure.....

Kitty CAT Power for the house ? Or do you just like that colour ? :)

Sounds reasonable service call, belt for Alternator/fan, solenoid for starter. Keep checking battery voltage if alternator has shorted diode that will drain the batteries, also when running the output voltage will be low. Daily checks and log the value, if you see a slow decline check Alternator

Post detailed pictures of the panel layouts zoe, including closeups of any information labels. What major loads are on panel B ?

Lots of accumulated knowledge amongst the thread regulars here, and grs has installed many truckloads of Generac systems. The reason we need detailed pictures is even if everything is done to code, there can be variations as to exactly how things are set up.

Elect. installer called me back today and said my generator was only rated for 70 amps so he wired gen to Sub Panel B which only serves kitchen (gas range), master bedroom master bath and gas furnace and gas water heater. Gen is 22kw which I thought when I purchased it it would be enough to run whole house since most everything is gas, only A/C and dryer are electric. Guess I will have to get some gas lights!

This not generator related but is power. Florida in hot and dry patch, suddenly no bad weather the power goes out, not that unusual with country living, usually fixed within a hour and usually tree limb. However I decide to call the power Co. automated report power loss, as this Monday the holiday. Few minutes later they call me back to say sir check your lines as you are the only reported outage in that area. So I check house main, then get in my RTV an check service drop box about 300 feet away look up at the lines all looks clear. Then I look down my driveway 900 feet to the road that power line follows and I see smoke. So I approach carefully as I can see the top of dead pine tree across the drive still hung in the air, thinking 16K volt line on ground has started a fire. As I get close enough to see the wires, the hot line has been pulled down to ground wire but not broke and the fuse to my drop on the street pole is blown. So safe to approach and inspect the fire. The grass under wires is burning about 20 circle but it has made its way back into the under growth of the pine stand and is picking up speed as it now has lots of fuel. So use cell call power company report line cause fire and call 911. 911 answers and it is the wrong county they transfer me. I deliver location, size of fire, growth rate, and it has not popped up yet. I drive over the grassy area to stop that but no way to get into wooded area. So I wait, that was a long 15 minutes. Two trucks show I inform them no downed wires and no hot lines the small truck with 350 gallon and 1.5 line jumps on it and two guys one feeding line and other walking right into it. Within 30 minutes they got it out the larger truck ran a line to small one to refill and continue wetting as they rake all the smoldering piles. Power company was 10 minutes behind fire trucks, he pulled behind the small fire truck went up in his boom cleared the tree inspected line and then waited roadside to get ok to reset breaker. All said and done I shuck every ones hand and thanked them for their fast and professional service and I was left with about 120 foot burn circle. Good thing I called the power company instead of just sitting and waiting. Now what I'm considering if I fired my gen and had all my hoses on single moveable reel I could have water on that spot within ten minutes.

If your set is continuous rated, this equates to 91.7 amps at 240 volts, that's a fair whack!

Wow, Roy, that is quite a story! Lucky you got to it in time, or you could of had a forest fire on your hands.

Zoedog, I would not buy it. 22 kw is plenty enough. I have 17, and it powered the whole house, including a hot tub. Maybe you need a new electrician!

Well since they are calling for possible strong storms and large hail this afternoon, I put in the new relay and tested, and it started right up. I left the batteries disconnected though, because I didn't have time to test for any draws. That way if the power does go out, we can just slap the cables on the batteries and switch it to "AUTO" and it will start right up.

It is actually a Perkins 1004-4T, which is owned by CAT... So I guess kinda?? :cool2: I think the color was KATOLIGHT's, which is the manufacturer

Had Generac home evaluation done and they take square footage to determine lighting loads, then name plate on everything else. Also the Gen rating is usually peak, so you have derate it for 100% duty cycle and do power factor also. Heat is the killer of gensets there are usually three ratings 80 100 120 C then a life rating at each temp.

The load shedding relays generac sells for $125 each rated at 50 amp are easier than sub panel, you install at each device like range, drier, AC,

Our internet has been slow to non working recently so excuse the slow response and thanks for all the suggestions to what I thought was a problem with installation. Will try to get pictures of this installation as requested. I assumed that since the Generac came with a 200 amp service panel I would have 200 amps of power available. Our electrician split the power from the main entrance panel to Sub panel A and sub B and hooked up gen to B. What I don't understand is what keeps the generated power from going from B to A and back to the main panel therefore powering the whole house. I can live with the present setup and if I need power in another part of the house I will make electric cord with 2 male ends and don't send the safety police please.
