You Know You Are Old When

I remember when in high school on Friday nights after the football game we used to drive around and around White Castle Drive In. I think they call that cruising these days.
Loved those little bitty hamburgers with a half pound of onions stacked on.

I worked in one briefly as a 16 yo, mid 70’s. Mostly putting bicycles and push mowers together. $3.00 hour.
We also had a White Auto, very similar.
My first bike was from Western Auto. Would have been about 1967. I put a shifter from a car on it. The shifter wasn't hooked up to anything, but in my mind, it worked....

Western Auto anyone?
Had one in Arcade, NY. Not sure if there were any more in the area, but that was the one dad always went to. He bought me a 12-speed bike form that store. It was all chrome and had a dark blue seat. All my friends had 10-speeds, so I felt pretty special.

Western Auto anyone?
Western auto was one of my fondest memories as a kid and I still remember the look and feel of the store and kindly remember the owner. If he knew you well, he might--might--let you carefully look close--but not touch-- the pump shotguns in the rack.

Western auto in it's later years started to carry lower quality products and novelty things and I think tha combo helped do them in.

In saving for a set of golf clubs at age 10 or so, it was a laborious process because I had to cut lawns and return bottles for the $$. The owner watched me save little by little and as I got close he said he would sell them to me at his cost if I didn't tell anyone. No sir. $35.00 +/-

Now, it's a pool hall.

We had one in my hometown when I was a kid. Only went there a couple times but I remember it being bicycles, Radio Flyer-type wagons and some hardware. Don't remember seeing auto parts. Never had much interest in guns so couldn't tell you if they carried them or not.

It closed by the time I hit my mid teens.

The Western Auto was owned by husband and wife and it was the first time I ever built a repore with a store owner as a kid of 7-8 years old.

I bought a trickle charger for the boat and some single tools... never treated me as a kid.

Radio Shack was my other go to to get my free battery each month!

I still have a working battery charger labeled Western Auto that I inherited from my grandfather.
