You Know You Are Old When

Here in the east, it was J.J. Newberry. The flagship store was located across the street from the office where I worked in Stroudsburg, PA. The chain was purchased in 1972 by McCrory's, who took it nationwide.
Was the Newberry name still around that late? ISTR their stores around here changing their name to Britt's some time in the mid-ish 60s.

Another long-gone northeast chain was Zayre. Even in their heyday, every store I visited seemed kind of shabby.

The flagship Newberry store in Stroudsburg PA. closed in 2002, the year before I retired. It was a gentile reminder that it was time for me to go too.

I couldn't go into Zayre's stores. Their sound system emitted a high pitched squeal which drove me out. I don't know if you have the Big Apple convenience store chain where you are but their door alarm does the same thing. It's just at a frequency which is obnoxious. I mentioned it to a store manager years ago who said "too bad." She watched me go back out to my truck and drive next door to the Irving station.

Ames department stores came along later as a flash in the pan. They seemed to be doing well until they bought out the old Kings department stores, and couldn't recover from it.

Ames actually goes back to the 1950’s. We had them in our area 1980’s - early 2000’s. They probably appeared as a flash in the pan to communities that got a store later, toward their end.

Oh yeah, the one on Main street was only three blocks from home when we lived in town. Did a lot of lusting for a bike from Western Auto.
The one in town closed about 6 years ago. Owner kept the name long after there was no more Western Auto until he was forced into retirement.
