You Know You Are Old When

We still have to dial 1+ on our land lines. Since we still have to use fax for some government farming business we have a landline in the house. I have a desk phone for it in the office, it usually goes to voicemail. Spectrum includes the VOIP line for free with our fiber internet but charges $25 for unlimited long-distance calling. It is also nice to have a home number to give out instead of my cell when a phone number is required but I don't want to be bothered by their phone calls.

We also have a landline in the shop that we use for the stained-glass business. The shop has a separate fiber drop and modem. Same $25 charge as the house line. The monthly charge for that internet and phone counts as a business expense. The internet is only 100 Mbps in the shop vs 400 Mbps for the house. The house system runs the security cameras.
I think they charge flat rates for unlimited calls, but on the bills there is no distinction between local and long distance. And no charges for long distance minutes anymore. Yes, we dial 1 plus the area code for all calls, even if they are local.

A couple of friends and I went to Wyoming to attend another friend's wedding in 2005. Took two days to get there, but we took state roads almost all the way. Was really interesting to see what real America looks like, not what you see from the Interstate.
Back when SWMBO and I were traveling to see the country with a travel trailer in tow we only got on the BIG roads when absolutely necessary. You are miss so much by driving as fast as you can between point A and B, slow down and take in the sites and sounds of everyday life. See what you are missing!

That's what I liked when I was suncontracting... I'd be in an area for a few weeks, and get to know it somewhat.
It was a case of not knowing what I had until it was gone. I didn't like the ups and downs of my income and in a weak moment sacrificed freedom for security.

Landline obviously works, but there are many email-to-fax services out there that are much cheaper, and have the advantage of coming in pre-digitized and searchable.

Also, if you have a business, you could switch the entire thing over to a VOIP business service that gives you extensions, voice mailboxes, texting, email-to-fax included, and a virtual receptionist. I use RingCentral, because they're one of the few that still offer a separate fax line, but there are many others.
