We had 3 named Cathy at the same time last week and 3 people stood up.So that's why. I liked it better when I was addressed in the waiting room as Mr. last name.
There is nothing wrong with calling out the first name only. When I hear my first name, I stand up and smile as I walk toward her, but it just seams a little forward, especially after a lifetime of Mr. name.
And sometimes it can get confusing. Sometimes more than 1 person named John is in the waiting room.
About half our census foreign born and reading some of the names is a real challenge.
A now retired admit clerk was very good about spelling out in parentheses the way a difficult name sounds...
