You Know You Are Old When

So that's why. I liked it better when I was addressed in the waiting room as Mr. last name.

There is nothing wrong with calling out the first name only. When I hear my first name, I stand up and smile as I walk toward her, but it just seams a little forward, especially after a lifetime of Mr. name.

And sometimes it can get confusing. Sometimes more than 1 person named John is in the waiting room.

We had 3 named Cathy at the same time last week and 3 people stood up.

About half our census foreign born and reading some of the names is a real challenge.

A now retired admit clerk was very good about spelling out in parentheses the way a difficult name sounds...

You are old out west when you remember Les Schwab employees running to greet you and running, running, running on the job. Les Schwab is a west coast tire and service store that used to be family owned. The running stopped now that it is corporate.

Whenever a family owned business goes "public corporate" it is done, it will no longer be the business that it was it will go to hell in a hurry.

Occasionally there are secondary benefits to ‘ladies first’.

Yes, while standing and turning around you have the opportunity to check out the front view, then a profile and then the rear view, all the while being polite.

Roof access hatch is by ladder… the Hospital Admin is hands on and wanted to see for herself what she was paying for…

I said I hope you don’t mind but I will go up the ladder first… always being the gentleman.

Had a boss of about a 12 person team who was quite the adventurer. Greenland, Antarctica, Alaska, Africa, Southeast Asia, etc.
He'd often repeat his same stories.
Got so he'd start a story, one of us would say something like "number 73", the rest would chuckle then we would go about our business, not paying any further attention.

I now have a habit of starting a story to my friends or coworkers with "I may have told you this before, but cannot remember, so stop me if I have." Sometimes they'll stop me and say "Yeah, I remember that." And we then continue with the conversation that prompted the story. Works pretty well with us old folks to politely keep us from embarrassing each other.
