Dial up is what was available here...

My tenants had satellite and complained of cost after I reluctantly spent $2,500 on tree removal in 2004... he said he was getting throttle back and paying overage... sometimes he was spending $300 a month or about 3x the cost of city Comcast then.

Then HD Satellite came out and they wanted me to to spend another 8k taking out a bunch more and I said no when asked in 2009?

Since then Internet has been a problem... in my rental agreement there is a line item that says not served by DSL, Comcast and no HD Satellite...

The problem comes back because the renters would call Comcast and they would be told the address is in the service area and then arrange for service only to have a tech show up and say it is not possible and then engineering would get involved and price install as much as 15k

After years of this Comcast and I were able to make a deal with Business Service and a long term contract so I furnish it as part of the rental agreement.

The irony is my tenant said he was very happy here except needed Internet for his new business... Comcast goes live the same week my tenant told me he make an offer on a house in town...

When using faster internet, it is often advantageous to reduce the browser cache. Often browser cache is large and it takes time for the browser to figure out if it has the page in cache or needs to get it from the net. It is quicker to just get it from the web with the higher speed connections. I also notice that the DNS servers can have impact. Some of them get really slow at times.

Low speed DSL here on 3 miles of 1970's vintage copper lines from the central office. Pings at 9megs but actually downloads at 600K. Still beats dialup.

Likely you have 9Mbps (mega bits per second) while downloads are 600KBs (k bytes per second). As you know, there are 8 bits normally in a byte, so you have to divide the 9Mbps by 8, giving you max 1.125MBs (mega bytes per second) without any overhead. 600KBps is reasonable for short downloads, downloading multiple Gig files should yield somewhat faster speeds (usually less overhead).

Some of the DSL lines where I have lived are on 1922 phone lines... I guess the Bell System really was all about reliability and made to last... it had to be as they were on the hook for repairs.

In the area where I live, 1.5 Mbs Centurylink.net is the max. A mile down the road they have Charter cable also. I at least whish I had a choice.

Well guess what, their deal fell through and we are now contracted! So I guess we will have DSL unless I can get a 4G hotspot with generous data allowances. I've had unlimited 4G since it came out but Verizon closed the loopholes we used to keep that plan. We never really needed it since we have a robust cable modem and wifi all over the property. But I'm moving to a very rural area and luckily we have a tower nearby. The first pic shows the cable modem where we are currently. The 2nd. pic is 4G. The 3rd. is the 4G at the new property. Very impressive.

We had Verizon out about 10 days ago to install their Cantenna system. The outdoor antenna works with a supplied modem/router of sorts that provides wifi to our devices. A coax cable runs from the antenna to a typical location for a modem.

I don't think I could live without the Internet and there was no way I wanted a satellite based system. I'm very happy with the service and I'll update on speeds once I move the antenna higher up at my home.

Could you say more about that Verizon system? Maybe just a Verizon catalog number?

I'd like to talk to Verizon to see if cellular coverage is strong enough here to provide me an alternate to satellite Internet.

This is what my plan calls it. "LTE INTERNET INSTALLED 20GB" i believe it was called Home Fusion at one time.
