You don't have a high speed Internet connection??

We had a typesetter that had a paper tape that you had to manually pull through a reader to "boot" it. That was 1987. We had punch card programming that left right before I was hired. To this day, if you remove a tile in the raised floor in the computer lab, you stand a good chance of getting those punched chads blown in your eye by the air conditioning!

Hey, I learned FORTRAN at Purdue on punch cards. We always chuckled at the guys who would drop their card stacks and have everything out of order...

(I may have been one of those guys more than once)

Yeah, teletype---always will remember finding a pile of paper on the floor come early office hours.
Guess that was the early version of SPAM.

Well I just got off the phone with Century Link and they graciously agreed to extend my DSL discount for another year or two. I called earlier in the month and was told they wouldn't talk about it till the day before my current discount expired. I pay the same rate for 1.5 mbps that they charge people that can get 10 so I tell them full price for my service is not justified. I only went with the 1 year extension in hopes something better will come along.

I have been a customer with them since 1979. I have cut my service from the full phone service bundle to internet only since cell service has improved and we need those anyways.

HughesNet speed is up and down like a yo-yo. I tested this morning and got 4.87 Mbps, tested 2 minutes later and got the fastest ever 20.14 Mbps.

Ran a test on Speed Test, the yo-yo was up. :D:

Just ran "speed test" on the DSL and the results are different than what I remembered. 2-1/4 miles of copper line buried in the 1970's to the central office.9 meg download and 0.8 meg upload.

I did not think anyone would be lower than my posted DSL speed and I live in the Heart of the SF Bay Area... can look out my window and see Silicon Valley and the SF skyline.

The service in my area dates from the 1950's with 1950's wood utility poles... my old home was all from the 1920's with braided copper phone lines...

Twenty minutes away... is a world of difference... an old home is 20 years...

I started here with ISDN. Ended up putting in the Exede satellite system and feel it's better.

They just (literally, about 3 weeks ago) just got done laying fiber optic down my road however, they didn't come down to the end where I am, they stopped at a development (1 house, suposed to end up being something like 20 houses)

At least we have three houses down here, all willing to suscribe! If this farm is ever developed, it would be closer to 100 homes verses their mere 20.

I can't imagine ATT will run a fiber system and right next to it, a copper line out to us??

Surely they will piggyback us onto the fiber somehow?

I detest ATT but am willing to bend my convictions for this.

Up here in Northern Michigan, it's common to not have choices (or service at all). One company uses Ubiquiti antennas and towers to provide service. I do the same, but privately. I live on hill and have a 10 mile point to point connection that is rock solid and delivers 20+ Mbps. The service on the other end is Charter.

What exactly is braided copper phone lines? I have been in the phone business a long long time and have never seen this.

Maybe woven cotton cover over tar, on each separate wire of a twisted pair? That's what I found under my 1943 house.
