I have got to get a manual, LOL. OK at work today I mean today while working hard I was on hoyetractor.com (great site Aaron) and found this thing call steering shaft fix, it talks about the steering box being so hard to service that it is over looked while doing PM, so I got home after a hard day at work /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif and I thought I would take a look at mine, /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif d#$@^%&*^$ if their not right, you can barely see it, has anyone every put oil in theirs, if so can someone tell me of a some what easy way to do it, without pulling the dash and tank off, and will it use 80w90. mines not leaking or anything, may not have any oil in it, just wanted to check it. anyway Thanks again and I will make this my last stupid question for awhile anyway...Robert I was just ask here at home what PM was preventive maintenance, I think I spelled it right

I have a YM2000 and during my first service I pulled the fuel tank to discard old fuel and clean the tank. In doing so I found a plug in the top of the steering box. I put 85/90 wt oil in it. First trip out I thought I had power steering. A few days later I noticed oil on the side of the transmission case. So I cleaned it well and pulled the fuel tank again, removed the side cover of the steering box that has the adjustment bolt in it. Cleaned it well and made a gasket out of gasket material and put everything back together. 3 months later easy steering and no oil on the side of the transmission.

Gasket material from NAPA / Autozone

Permatex

(Shut the fuel valve off, remove the fuel line from the filter and drain the fuel.)

Look at it as an opportunity to clean the fuel tank....

Took a couple hours to do.

Hope this helps...

The only stupid question, is the one you don't ask. We all have things, we need to know and don't. But if you ask, someone will know, and maybe next time they will be the one asking about something they don't know, and maybe you can give them the answer. So keep asking, we all learn by the answers that are given, maybe we need to know and don't ask, because we think it might sound like it is a stupid question. Then if you ask, we find out, without letting anyone know that we didn't know. LOL Don't be afraid to ask. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Here is what I did to my personal F20 that I mow with. You might call this a lazy fix but I got tired of worrying about it and didn't want to disassemble the whole tractor every time to check it.

I drilled a 3/8" hole in the steering tube in an easy to access place. I used a lot of grease to try to keep metal shavings from going into the box. Then I just poured some 90wt oil in the hole and used a rubber plug to plug the hole. I can tell about how much oil is in there by running a wire down the hole. Not probably the right way to do it but it is an option and takes seconds to fill or check.

Thanks Kid, Dick and Aaron, Kid the problem I have is manual gauges on the dash, that I just put on, but cleaning the tank is a good thought, Dick thank you for the advice, knowing some people don't mind stupid questions Helps, one question for Aaron, on your fix sounds like the way I will have to do it because of the gauges, will it matter how high or low I drill the hole. Thanks again Robert

I don't know why it would matter where you drilled. Just dont hit the bearing race on the bottom 1" of the tube or the plastic bushing at the top 1" of the tube. I just had a few inches of the tube that I could see on my tractor before it disappeared into the plastic so I didn't have much of an option. I'd just find an easy spot and drill. Be sure you have a plug ready. Its a lot easier to find a bit to match your plug size than a plug to match your hole size (I did it the hard way... drill the hole then think about how I'm going to plug it later).
