YM2000 vs. YM2001

I've been looking to buy a yanmar for some time now, a friend has let me use his YM2001 and it has plenty of power for my needs. I have found a YM2000 I would like to purchase. From my understanding the YM2000 is a 2 cyl and the YM2001 is a 3 cyl but the YM2000 has more torque? Is this correct?

Is it a 2001 or a 2001D ?? A 2000 is Listed at 22 hp 2 cyl. While the 2001D (4WD) is listed as 23 hp 3 cyl. The 2 cyl will have more torque. 3 CLY runs smoother than the 2 cyl

I believe it is a YM2001 I know its not a YM2001D I'll have to find out for sure. I just want to make sure I get one that is comparible to my friends as his has enough to do what I need.

YM2000 is rated 20 PTO hp, same as YM2001, at maximum working rpm. (2400 for both?)

You won't be giving up anything except smoothness. As I understand it YM2000 is stronger when rpms drop into the lower half of the rpm range, while YM2001 is sure to run smoother than the older YM2000 with its clank!-clank!-clank! characteristic sound.

Mostrander, listen to the sound file referenced from my sig (below). Compare that to what you recall of your friend's 2001. I would be interested to hear your comparison.

My powerstroke is 13 years old, I drive a powerstroke company truck, when I get in my wife's explorer I keep grinding the starter because it is so quite. I guess I just love the sound. LOL
