*ym2000 cracked head

Good evening everyone. My ym2000 2tr20a head was dropped off at machine shop after suspected head gasket failure and they said It has multiple cracks in it and not repairable.( A lot of antifreeze in the oil.)Looking for advise and reaching out to bad if anyone has a used usable head.

Questions are .*

1.Is it worth paying 780$ *(after rebate and shipping from hoyt)for new head and 800$ for install + fluid change etc. so 1600$ total head and install for a 2 wd older tractor?*

2. Does anyone have a resource for a used head?*

This is an older ym2000 2 wd that I use to pull bush hog on trails and cut my few acres.*
Im too far away and dont have time to attempt repairs myself so stuck with mechanic where its at in maryland. If I didnt repair it I would need a replacement quickly. And funding is limited as I definitely did bot see it coming.
thanks for advice!

Pay the piper if you don't want to fix it yourself. But please figure out why it overheated and cracked in the first place. I am a believer in fixing what you have. Throw away society does not apply to 35 year old tractors. If you buy another older tractor for that price you will have possibly as many problems as you have now.

*ym2000 cracked head... and 800$ for install + fluid change etc.
If you can change your own oil you can bolt on a new head. If you don't have one you will need a torque wrench ($10 from Harbor Freight) to torque the bolts correctly, everything else is about as simple as making supper.

These were designed to be owner maintained. There's nothing complicated about bolting on the head. Only difficulty I can think of is one head bolt is down inside the intake manifold and not evident at first glance, and that's probably the most complicated thing you will face. Don't spend $800 for someone to do this for you.

Have you confirmed the new head comes complete ?
some replacement heads are sold bare with only seats and possibly valve guides installed, which means that springs and new valves need to be installed and checked for the appropriate valve/ seat contact pattern and seat width then the rocker assembly from your existing head can be used. It is possible that the Yanmar heads come complete - just something to confirm.

Looks like Hoye's head is complete. $733 + tax + shipping + refundable core charge.

looks to be Well worth it to buy the loaded head for the small price difference,
no worrying about poor quality local- small shop head work some of us have had to deal with.

Unfortunately I am in the military and stationed in fl so I can't do it in maryland. My partner on the land uses it to maintain the property he can change oil etc but is concerned about swapping the head, I would personally do it if I was there. I think he is capable of doing it my questions are, does he need to pull injectors and swap them? If so is there a special tool for injector pulling? And does he need to set the valves, if so what are the procedures, how does he verify tdc if that's when they need to be set beside verifying valves are closed?

Yes, the injectors would have to be pulled and put in the new head. Might be possible the old head could be shipped to Hoye, alow and maybe pay them to swap the injectors. If not, this tool is available to rent or buy if needed. INJECTOR REMOVAL TOOL **RENTAL* $1 FOR 1 DAYS: Yanmar Tractor Parts

Yes, valve will have to be set at .006" cold. Head bolts 44-88-118 and 133 + or - 3.6 ft lbs. Easiest way to set the valves on your Yanmar

Nice article here by Hoye with instructions on head gasket. Yanmar Head Gasket Replacement Guide

Off subject, but wondering about Carey, anyone hear from him?

I haven't? I was thinking about him the other day, that he hasn't been around in awhile? I use to have his number somewhere and possibly an email? I know where he lives but I don't go by that way so I cant just swing by. I have been hoping for a few weeks he would check in and confirm to us he is ok.

I will look for his phone number or email.

Sorry Guys!!! Had all I could do lately. Talked to Steve @ Spalding last week. Rear tire problems. Finally have it straightened out. He gave me his excellent advice as usual on what to do for now. But the lips still up on a local tire shop. Caused me all kind of problems!!:confused2: But all is good and have to give Gemplers's Tire Reliners a BIG. Tire Reliners - Tractor Tire Reliners | GEMPLER'S. They worked and fit like a champ. EX. Service IMO. looks like I saved the Org. Bridgestone's. That is a big plus for me. I've been and tying to keep the 2000 org.. And now highly doubt I will ever wear them out....... Steve asked how long I've had it? 9yrs. and 625hrs. Yeah! looked like it just rolled off a boat with just a new seat. Now if I can get my touch screen and pad working. Again! I may be able to type on it again. But this is looking highly doubtful. Sorry to Hijack this tread. These guys have you covered on any thing you may need advice on. Oh! Bel Air. Md. until the late 70's.

Seems like an easy decision especially if that's the only thing wrong with the tractor.

What could you hope to replace it with for $1600..???

Make sure the radiator and cooling system is fine if you repair it.

I would keep looking for a used head or engine, and wait until I could work on it myself.

Sounds like the tractor got hot hot. Has the block and pistons been examined thoroughly making sure they are ok? Would be bad to spend $1600 on a head job and have other problems. later.
