hello everyone, here is my first post on your forum. i have read alot of good post from here and decided to join:thumbsup: just bought a 146 yanmar and im looking to bring it back to life

I can help you with your YM146. My first question would be, do you have all the manuals?
There is an Operators Manual with all the general information; there is a Parts Manual showing all the parts; and there is a Service Manual that describes how to do the service and repairs. If you need any of these manuals, contact me.

well to start with the electrical is rigged very badly.. to crank it i have to hook up jumper cables and lift the hood where there is a light switch...not kidding. i have to flip the switch on and off to sorta crank it...the mower deck staysa running at all times unless i turn the mower off and unhook the belt. on a good note. whern im using the 3point hitch and a grader blade i made from scratch it is a beast..and the pto seems 2 work well also...there is just some major electrical issues and im guessing the pulley that runs the belt is messed up..also the belly mower is in pretty bad shape

Cool. Not sure Gary (Gjamtrac) has a spare wiring harness laying around, but he does have (usually) all three types of the belly mowers that were used on these tractors. I also will part with one of mine, most likely the YCM48 I have and am not planning to use.

I ended up buying a parts tractor to feed my other two machines once I got into them.

On a side note, one of my YM146's has a push button starter on it (ignition switch failed and the previous owner didn't feel like shelling out for a new one) and I thought my front PTO wasn't working all of a sudden. I recently realized that the key must be in the "run" position to allow power to lock up the PTO clutches. I stopped putting my key in the ignition because it was push buton start!

ok. yeah if the motor is running the pulley is turning weather the key is on or not.

The pulley on the PTO should not engage untill the switch is flipped up, but the ignition key has to be in the on position as well.

The PTO driveshaft is direct bolted to the crank pulley, so it will spin as long as the engine is running, but the clutch plates inside the PTO are what need to lock in order for the PTO pulley to spin. The locking is electronically actuated.

yeah the switch is defective more than likely..and the front pto is the one that runs the belly mower so im thinking there may be something wrong with that and the switch. but the rear pto doesnt engage until i push the handle forward so im thinking it still works correctly. my belly mower its self has seen better days and hardly cuts even the shortest grass. it wasnt equipped with the scalping wheel and seems like any chance it gets it wants to do a nose dive and tear up the yard.

it really is in poor shape but i just cant seem to bring myself to sell it cause i realize it has alot of potental.
