YM 1700 head gasket

I pulled the head off of my tractor this weekend, suspected blown head gasket. There was no gasket dressing, or so it appeared, put on the gasket. I know it specifically calls for it in the shop manual. Also there was a substantial amount of carbon build up on the block. Is everyone using gasket dressing of somme type? Is heavy carbon build up normal on the top of the block? Could I be so lucky for my problem to be an improperly installed head gasket? The head is in the shop currently being checked for cracks- keep your fingers crossed.

Just read an old post from Aaron at Hoyes stating Yanmar head gaskets do not require sealant.

As a rule copperkote can be used on most all composition gaskets just fine except permatorque types (these are not them) to fill/seal small imperfections around water passages and its not a bad idea. I normally use copperkote on a head gasket of this type and did on mine when I had it down fwtw.

But the basic point/rule is gaskets are the seal all by themselves remember that. What most folks assume is because there are "sealers" that that means you must use them - not true and mostly not recommended by manufacturers either. hth

I will use copperkote if for no other reason than my piece of mind.

I'll agree with Aaron & Winston there's no need for it. The Only time I ever use a Sealent is when there is or possible problems with the Head or Block for that matter. Which in doing so is IMO. a typical Ghetto Rig.

Can you post pics of the things you are asking about? btw I personally would like to see pics of the gasket on both sides. Yeah copperkote wont hurt a thing in this instance its optional though like I mentioned but peace of mind is a good thing.
