Yellow Jackets not being friendly

/ Yellow Jackets not being friendly #31
In MN. We have Bald Faced Hornets that make the Big Paper Hot Air Ballon shaped nests with the entry hole in the bottom. They are more Black and White striped and fairly aggressive. The little ones that build nests in the ground around here are Hornets and they are the meanest little S.O.B's around. Bumble Bees and Wasps look mean but are fairly tollerant. I like the bees but not the Wasps, Hornets, Etc.:mad:

techwrtr2, I believe that all you need to do is place and open container of gas in close proximity to the opening and the vapors will do the rest. That is what I got from Bxpanded's post. Maybe he can clarify it for you.

I grew up around Ft. Worth and I don't think the things you and I call "yellow jackets" are what the OP is talking about. Looked around on the web and decided they are a species of paper wasp like the red wasp. Mean little critters when you disturb them though.

Hmmm..., having to quote myself to clear up a mistake. I meant to say what most people call yellow jackets where I'm from are NOT what the OP was talking about. Sorry about the confusion.

We have these yellow paper wasps everywhere (under the eves on the house and such), but the nests are usually pretty small. Generally not enough of them in a nest to kill anybody (unless you are allergic to them), but the stings will make you swell up pretty good -- especially if it gets you in the face.

The amount you use is about a cup, it will be absorbed by the dirt well before getting to the stream, it will be the fumes that kill them. I certainly would share your concern though.

I have an in ground nest I need to exterminate... problem is it's in very close proximity to a stream feeding a pond with fish in it. Really reluctant to dump gas in the hole.

Somewhere on this board, last year maybe, someone said to put a clear bowl over the entrance. They won't be able to get out, won't dig another entrance bec the bowl is clear, and will die.

Haven't tried it myself though.

If you want to keep the nest couldn't you get a fire extinguisher, go out at night, hose it down and bring it home.
I didn't say it would be cheap.

You do need to pour some in the hole but just a very small amount as RaT has said. A few spoonfulls will likely do the trick. It will evaporate before it makes it to the creek. Don't burn it.

I hate them. I was mowing on my ztr the other day at my moms house and ran over the top of there entrance and didn't know it. I felt something tapping my head and reached up and swatted it and got stung on the head. well I crushed him. I didn't know at the time when you crush one it emits a phermone or something that attracts the rest of his brothers to defend the little s---. so I got stung about 12 times and left my mower sitting in my mother's yard for about 8 hours before I could go restart it safely. I BURNT THE GAS JUST FOR THE SATISFACTION OF IT. I knew I didn't have to light it, I just wanted to at that point.

Actually they do not emit a pheromone, they just hollar to their buddies. It goes something like this; Larry, Carl, Clem, go git the others and tell um its the guy on the "your color" tractor. Git him good, he just ran over the hole to our home and he needs a good lesson. Bite him and sting him with the rocking motion I showed you where you alternate doing bite/sting/bite. This guys gotta go!
