we have a 2007 X724 has 470hrs. Unit had 300hrs when we purchased in 2009.Last year, unit started surging when cold, when under power/PTO engaged, it runs fine. We've replaced the fuel pump, filters, started using 91 octane gas, and it still surges when cold...can't afford any more repairs at dealer rates!spent over $1K already! Please help!

All of this was done at the same dealer?

If so, then a sit-down talk with the dealer and the JD area/region rep is in order for a clear explanation of their ability to correct the problem.

All things were done, and, they supposedly talked to a facroty rep in 2010 and
nothing was done. They were told to "check electrical connections", then it was, "check the fuel/system, that was done. I cant afford to pay the same rates as a farmer with a $300k tractor/combine. I've had with that dealer.

Put it in writing with all the details and charges, and send a copy to Deere customer service.
Do you have the tech manual? and are you interested in chasing it down yourself?
It is fuel injection so not as straight forward as a carb system.

I get some hic-ups from my fuel injection X485 but they clear up fairly quickly.

My dad recently got a new X724, currently at 27 hours, I ran it yesterday and did notice it ran rough at idle, even when hot. The one we traded in with 1300 hours did idle rough cold, not as bad as the new one though.
Guess I'm due for a chat with my dealer about some warranty work, for the price paid, it should be flawless.

The EPA rules and regs on our engines these days, no thanks to CA, will mean many trials and tribulations for smooth running engines. Our Gov't is meddling entirely too much and we just have to put up with the consequences.

There is no excuse for a modern fuel injected tractor engine to run rough. Automotive engines run perfectly smooth, while emmiting very low emmisions. They also have a much more complex task to perform, as they must run well at many RPM ranges. Quick throttle response, and a constantly changing enviroment are all handled well in modern automotive engines. Computerized engine management has everything to do with this.

No carburated engine has ever come close to matching the smooth and reliable performance that is now common in our cars and trucks.
With the much less varied demand of most industrial type engines, (Most run at a constant RPM, with little need for good throttle response.) fuel injection should be able to work perfectly. Electronic throttles could also eliminate mechanical governors for flawless speed control.
And since most of the parts are made by the billions, the prices should be reasonable for these systems to be on all gas powered tractors.

I wish my new X540 had EFI...

Our X720 went into the shop after my wife mowed her sisters yard with and stopped for a few minutes to chat and it wouldn't start back. It was still under warranty and she was really ticked, called them and told them to come pick it. She had too much other stuff going on at the time to haul it her self. They claimed it had water in the fuel, changed the plugs, drained the tank, changed the fuel filter and air filter. Bill including picking it up was like $225, we brought it back home ourselves. Now we run non-ethanol fuel and Seafoam in every tank. It seems these EFI engines are pretty darn picky IMHO. We had a JD LA130 for about 3 years, never missed a beat, never spit, never sputtered, never surged. You would think a $9K mower wouldn't be so darn picky about fuel. We ran 87 10% ethanol in the LA130 all the time. She wishes now she had bought the diesel. It seems a bit better since switching to 100% gas but still surges when you first start it. Other than the engine it's great. If we trade we're going to take a real bath on it, believe me we've already tried. I think they offered $6200 for it with a 125 hours. This a dealer that she spends about $10-20K a year on equipment and parts.
