I finally bit the bullet and ordered it June 1. I've been eyeing a Wellenstein Bx42s/52s for years now but the WoodMaxx caught me eye with good reviews and a very competitive price for an 8" hydraulic feed chipper.
I want to be clear that the only experience I've had with chippers is a big 12" Vermeer rental unit I've rented a few times.

It took about 18 days business days to ship and I was able to schedule delivery about 2 days after that. Assembly took several hours but I took my time and made sure everything was done right. My initial impression of build quality is very good and I'd say roughly the equivalent as my LandPride BB and rotary mower although the paint is superior to the LandPride attachments. The toplink attachment to the chipper is very similar to how a trailer hitch works and the 5/8" hitch pin holes were slightly out of alignment and took about 10-15 seconds with a 5/8" drill bit to get the pin in. That was the only build-quality issue I noticed indicative of the country of origin. The unit is Quickhitch compatible and the lift arm width was originally much too close together but the retractable pieces (also similar to a trailer hitch) were reversed so the offset was in instead of out. It's a little hard to explain but reversing them made everything line up fine. This originally confused me and was about to abandon the QuickHitch and was sort of pissed when I realized what the issue was but I suspect it was shipped this way so the unit is more compact with no parts sticking out. The WoodMax guys in upstate NY do a lot of the assembly there and I think act as a first line of defense against obvious manufacturing defects. They were also very pleasant to deal with when I called about adding lift-gate service to delivery since the unit is near the weight limit of my machine + palette forks and they responded within a few minutes of me emailing to inquire into the specific shipping date.

I realize without pictures, it didn't happen but the videos on the website do a good job and I have to say, I'm super thrilled with what this unit can do and how fast it processes material. It has an adjustable feed rate that I've left on max with the exception of some large 6"+ pine and some 4"+ hard maple. It demolished the pine but did begin to struggle with some larger, dry hardwood and I did stall my tractor once on a ~6" hard maple branch. The hydraulic feed is incredibly powerful and the unit can suck in large branches or small trees/saplings with little to no trimming and it was able to pull through things on its own that I could not "bend" into the 8" opening using my "man power". The Wallenstein is suppose to self-feed very well and i can completely understand how if you feed it a nice clean limb or branch the flywheel knives can grab hold of, it will pull right in but what I really like about the hydraulic feed is how you can basically fill it with smaller limbs, twigs, and such and it will "push" that stuff through. Again, I've never used the Wallenstein and only mention it as those were the two units I was deciding between.

Of course it doesn't have the capacity and feed rate of the big Vermeer I was used to but I was pleasantly suprised with what it can handle with my sized tractor and the mobility of being able to zip around the property, pull up to a brushpile or deadfall, engage the PTO, bust right through it and hop back on and move someplace else is really great. So far, zero complaints and I'm super happy with the purchase and highly recommend.

Good to here you're happy with the chipper. I've been planning on buying the same one very soon. Do they ship to your home or do you have to pick it up at a shipping terminal?

Straight to your house. If you need lift-gate service, they do charge an extra $35.
I have to say, chipping wood is almost addictive!

Now that it has been almost a year - do you have any advice for a prospective buyer?

I've been very happy with mine except for the hydraulic feed lever/valve that broke and am yet to replace. It's cast aluminum and the housing cracked and where the lever attaches broke off. It handles anything I've put through it with ease and makes some real nice wood chips. Can't really think of any other negatives.

Awesome - thanks!

I should throw in my tractor is 42 hp, forget what its rated at the pto but it handles the chipper with ease. The chipper is heavy and has a good solid base to it so even when running larger limbs through it the tractor doesn't even know it's there. There's no shaking or anything and since this chipper has such a heavy flywheel it doesn't bog the tractor one bit.

Just ordered one yesterday! That good to hear as I will be powering it with 42 PTO HP so it sounds like it will work without any problem. Any tips on assembly ?
Thanks!

My Woodmax hydrolac chipper is around 3 years old and has been very satisfactory. As has been stated the ability to move from job site to job site is convient. Limbing fence rows is as simple as cut, chip, done.

Thanks Budweiser John! I received the notice today that mine has shipped. Im already impressed with Woodmaxx and how quickly they got it shipped (tells you on the site to allow 3-5 days).

Assembly was pretty straight forward. Make sure the yellow feeder lift bar clears the red hydraulic feed control bar that is directly under it. (The bars that are above the feed inlet) Mine interfere and when I put a large limb in and it causes the yellow feed lift bar to bounce up and down it hits the red feed control and throws it in neutral. It's annoying to say the least, I just keep forgetting to adjust one or the other. The brackets may have been bent or welded slightly out of place. I believe this is what caused the hydraulic feed control lever to break apart.

Mine came in yesterday and I got it all together. I will double check the bars now that you mentioned it - thanks

Now if the weather would only clear up so I could get out there and use it!!!

Would 29 pto hp have a WM-8H chipping 6"+ pine at a reasonable feed rate?
Or does it need more power?

I won't be chipping that size stuff all the time but I want the ability to do it without stalling the tractor or having to wait while it works at a low feed rate.

My tractor is rated at 35 hp at the pto and it doesn't even know its back there. This is a heavy wood chipper with a very solid base so its very still while its running. It also has a very heavy flywheel so once its up to speed there's really no strain on the tractor. I'd imagine you'd be fine. Woodmaxx specs this chipper for 19 hp minimum anyways.

There's a video of someone chipping with a WM-8H and a 19hp tractor and it bogs down and nearly stalls the tractor on a 4" branch. So I'm skeptical of that lower hp limit.

Does your doesn't even know it's there include 6"+ softwood branches?

Thanks.

I have 42hp at the PTO and can run it at capacity with hardwoods at a pretty high feed rate. If you slow the rate down and running softwoods I would think you will be ok. If it starts to bog on a hard spot you can just hit the feed stop for a second or two then press it forward again so it can recover. Not a big deal with a hydro feed unit.

I've never had it bog down on the few occasions I've put something up to 6 inches in but anything over 5 or so is typically set aside for firewood.

2015 WoodMaxx WM-8H good when the hydraulic feed works. But despite their service dept. Advice it will not feed unless the oil is thick in the morning for 5-10 minutes. Tried honing regulator spool valve with 320 emery but not any better. Is there an STP OIL TREATMENT TO INCREASE THE HYDRAULIC OIL FROM 68 RATING TO SOMETHING THICKER,? OR ANY OTHER ADVISE WOULDE WELCOME. VERY FRUSTRATED WITH THIS PROBLEM. HYDRAULIC PUMP IS BEING DRIVEN FINE, SHAFT NUT TIGHT. EVEN BYPASSING THE REGULATOR HYD. DEVICE WILL NOT HELP SUGGESTING A WRAK OIL PRESSURE OUTPUT FROM THE HYD. MOTOR.

I have a WM WC46. One problem with it is if one gets a piece stuck under the hydraulic feed roller. I understand and have seen pictures of the feed roller lifter built into the Woodmaxx. A nice addition. We take the floor jack with us in the FEL. Can use it under the top part of the lift roller assembly to raise the roller if a piece is stuck. MUCH easier to do than trying to use a long crowbar, which takes both of us. With floor jack, only takes one of us. On the Woodmaxx, all one has to do is pull down on the lever they provide. Not sure you can fold the chute back on the Woodmaxx due to this though.

I have been burned once - buying sight unseen. SO..... I bought Wallenstein from my local Kubota dealer. I had a BX42S when I had my Ford 1700. Now I have the BX62S with my Kubota M6040.

Never had a moments problem. I never expected to either........

I thin my pine stands every spring. 900 to 1100 small( 1" to 6" on the butt) Ponderosa pines. The Wally chips them like they are Twinkies.
