Winter

/ Winter #2
I put a "winterizer" fertilizer down for the first time last year -- didn't really notice anything this spring different than not putting anything down.

I just cut a bit shorter the last few cuts of the season.

I rake up leaves - over and over and over. Hope the lawn appreciates it.

Nothing! Grass grows about 9-10 months of the year in SE Texas! Ha! There are a number of "winterizers" you can put down that should help the lawn once spring rolls around. Never tried any.. but it might be worth a shot once and see how the lawn looks next year.

I used to spend a lot of time both in the front and back yard discussing the changing seasons with the lawn and reminding it to stop growing and get ready for a heavy white snow covering. I thought it did some good as every spring it was there again getting long and green. Then the wife heard me one day and said something about being commited!? and the local "R"wing..So now I just let winter come and go. The lawn gets no more words of encouragment from me.
I've moved to communicating with my car about winter.I found that if you get inside she thinks I'm listening to the radio and leaves me alone. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I dethatch, fertilize in the Fall. I also try to keep the moss down.

Do grass drags on the sleds. That way the snowmobiles can bond with the grass a little before the snow covers it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Nothing really, but I just put a lawn in also so we'll see.

lawnduster, I was given this by my local Lesco fertilizer store:FERTILIZATION & WEED CONTROL

May 21-0-12 w/ momentum weed & feed

June 0-0-7 0.2 merit insect control

July 18-0-18 fertilizer

September 24-0-11 fertilizer & starter / reseed

November 34-3-11

Of course they are in the FERTILIZER business

Fertilize. Low nitrogen is best. (Using 5-24-20 this year)

I overseed (last week) with 10lbs Linn Rye (perenial) 10lbs Falcon Fescue per 10,000 sq ft.

I also spread pelletized lime. My lawn needs TONS more. Lime is slow to absorb into the soil. I lime spring and fall, at a light rate.

Leaves get mulched "in place". what better fertilizer? Best soils you'll ever run across is "old woods ground".

As summer heat arrives, I start cutting grass longer. In the fall, I return to the shorter hight. (2-1/2")

I don't know how much all this helps (or even HURTS) my lawn. All I know is it needs cutting every 3 or 4 days when it gets water, it looks healthy, and the neighbors keep asking me what I do to make my lawn so green.

Well I see a slight discrepancy,

Could be the difference in region but I guess the best thing to do would be sample the ground and take it to the local supply house for analyzation and they will tell you exactly what the soil needs to grow grass /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif It's usually free(figuring you'll by from them)

I also just put a ton of lime down(pelletized) thats right 2000lbs. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
What a work-out fifty 40lb bags.... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Last year I did nothing, and the lawn showed it this spring. In the past, I would cut, thatch, and fertilize with triple 10. I intend to do this again this year and hope that I can bring it back from the disaster that it has been all this past summer. I have heard that it takes about 4 years to get a good lawn established and only one year to destroy it. I hope that this isn't true, but I won't know until next summer. Here is hoping that I can turn the tide of disaster around with some care and over seeding.

IMO, the grass will grow whether you fertilize or not, therefore you may be able to "spead" your money to cover other expenses. Although, pelletized lime is excellent, as pH adjustment usually is needed by a lawn more than "lawn food".
