Thanks for all the replies guys! I'm leaning into the 38hp one but again my purchase is not going to be for some time yet. As far as I can tell the difference is HP only with those two. I am thinking of hst. And I want the weight but now so much so i can't now the lawn. Still much research to do but figured I'd ask that one for now. Thanks again

Apparently those are gross engine hp numbers and the pto hp ratings are 25 hp for the 1533 and 30 hp for the 1538. Both engines are rated at the same rpm and have the same displacement and compression ratio and are normally aspirated. I would bet my own money that the difference in hp between the two is because the higher hp one has had the pump turned up a bit. It's an easy way to give the appearance of offering more models than they do to enhance the company's image.

A 5 hp increase would be quite noticeable on a 25 hp tractor. From the brief description of your projected usage I would recommend the 30 hp model with HST.
