which forged 3/8 hooks?

The third pic won't work as a pintle hitch. angular relationship between other features on the part is sometimes important

I got the hitches painted today, which was nothing worth taking pictures of. But here is a couple of photos of the hitches while on the job These aren't all that good because something else was being photographed, not the hitches. I'm no photographer ether.

Are your dual wall plastic pipes filled with concrete or something for weight? I assume you are packing trails?

I think you've got it Jons, but please tell everyone whats wrong in this photo. This is for a common 2" receiver hitch....

No. The plastic culvert would only last just a few runs if it was weighted that much. They are normally weighted with nothing. The hardness of snow has much to do with time, which is for freezing.

Yeah, after I posted that I thought that was a stupid question. :)

P.S. There's two things wrong with your picture above but I'll let jonsstihl answer.

Oh h-ell, I could not find those 'weldable hooks' locally so I used standard ones and cut them back and proceeded to weld them onto my FEL frame.
That was years back and I have hoisted all sorts of loads (enough to raise my rear end) and so far no problems.
They have been installed for over 8 years now and used at least once a month.

"could not find those 'weldable hooks' locally so I used standard ones and cut them back"

That's me; did that on both sides of my 2' bucket on the 580, been on there at least that long. These days, I use the weldables, and nearly all of 'em are on 2" tube (with the pin hole oriented right  OK, I'll fess up - a couple of my plug-in hooks have pin holes drilled BOTH ways :ashamed:

I've had no probs with hooks from these guys
Weldable Grab Hooks

Sorry Arly, I've looked around quite a bit and haven't come up with your "half-pintle" hooks... Steve

Thanks for looking Steve. Does anyone know where we can get this style of forged hooks?? Thanks!

I don't know about the second one but I noticed the pin hole is not right compared to the orientation of the hook. when installed the hook will be horizontal instead of vertical.

Back to the backwards hook on the bucket. actually I almost did that on my bucket but it would have been on purpose. when you need to keep your pull down low. you can run the chain under the bucket and hook to the "backwards hook" so you are not pulling up at the same time.

Finally I decided not to add the extra Backwards hooks because I couldn't see myself needing to do that very often.

Jons got that correct. I just put the hook on top of the 2" tube for the photo, no welds made but it was 90 degrees off. I went to the school shop this morning to finish the hitch's up and found school was cancel due the virus thing. Oh well.

Arly, any chance these could replace BOTH halves of your "mini-pintle"?

Weld-on Excavator Hooks

and James, (since my old 580B isn't gonna see a "full restoration" in MY lifetime) my solution to the backward/forward conundrum was to develop my own set of "tinker toys" (eventually I'm planning on starting a thread showing ALL of 'em together) - the heart of the system is the 7 2" recievers I welded to the loader bucket (yes, seven; over/under pairs at each outside corner, 2 more inline with loader arms, and one centered on a piece of 10" channel that bridges between the mounts.

All but the two inline with the arms can be used front, back, or both. The "system" so far includes various male and/or female adapters in straight, tee, 90 and 45 degree, etc, plus a pair of 1/4" wall extenders in 30", 48" and 72". Also a small winch, various hooks, shackles, chains and straps. A few pics -

Sorry I got a bit OT, I REALLY need to do a tinker toy thread  ... Steve

Cool platform Bukitcase:thumbsup:Kinda reminds me of my house frameing days when a work platform was a skid of plywood on a lull . Not for nothing , but isn't that a scissor lift in the picture of the bucket . Just saying.:drink:

"scissor lift in the picture of the bucket . Just saying"

I wondered how long it'd take for that to come up :D
Yup, and just behind where the camera was for that pic, there's also a 50' boom lift - BOTH are just "projects" til I get around to doing some work on 'em. On the scissor lift, even if it was a runner it's definitely NOT as "off-roady" as the backhoe, and there's more than a couple "un-level" areas I need altitude. the scissor WILL get used when I build my next shop, a 48x60x16 - IME, there's good, better, best and crappy tools for ANY job. Eventually, I'll figure it all out (maybe)

Meantime, my "tinker toy set" lets me figure out ways of surviving a BUNCH more tasks than I would without 'em, so def. worth the time... Steve

I later learned the school was close because of snow on Friday but NOW its closed for the virus thing. Having said that, its likely I'll get back into the metals shop this week. The teacher is very much a "busy-body" and likes to be doing things in there which will allow us time to get back in there.
