I'm thinking of building an amphibious tractor...

Okay, not really; but by saying so I've convinced myself that my question about a really odd boat propeller is not too far out of place. There are enough geniuses here that know a lot about a lot and maybe I can get some help on this one.

I got this propeller in a pallet of parts I bought at a boat shop liquidation auction (See picture below). I want more information about it, but I have no idea where to start looking. I don't even know what to call it for a google search.

What is it? What's the purpose of the innovative design?

I don't know that it's a "propeller", in as much as it looks like an "impeller" to me. Since it came from a boat shop, maybe the impeller off of a jet drive?

Yep. That's it!! Now I can build my amphibious tractor with a jet propulsion system.

I would agree, it’s some sort of impeller. I’ve never seen one from a jet motor, but that would make sense

Spent some time around the lake/river when I was a kid and rode in a few jet boats... Never saw one tore down but it sure looks like a "water screw" of some type to me!

It's the loader mechanism from a Flux Capacitor. They put one on a train and a Delorean, why not a tractor.

Nope, it did not come from a boat jet unit. It looks to be feed impeller for some type of equipment. I worked on jet units for years, and this one has too many threads for water. "I THINK"...what diameter is it..?

It's 6 7/8". It has a keyed shaft.

I wondered if there were any boat mechanics floating around the site?? I'm trying to come up with a logical reason for some type of impeller to be around a boat shop?? Or was it the stray piece of something that just happpend to be in the back of the shop?? Hmmm...

All water cooled boat engines have impellers. This isn't like any I've seen, but I've only worked on smaller sized outboards. Maybe it's an impeller for an I/O or inboard?

It is for sure a impeller off of a jet boat motor.

pitch designation such as 14/18 indicates that the prop is basically variable pitch (angle) prop. The pitch (angle) varies from the leading edge to the trailing edge. Two numbers to indicate degrees of each blade in relation to an imaginary line perpendicular to the axis of the prop itself.

If you were to cut a variable pitch prop in two halves,the leading edge to the trailing edge, you would see that the blade is actually curved instead of straight like props of yesteryear which were typically single pitch props.

By choosing a prop with a lower pitch (i.e. a 13/17 vs. the 14/18) your craft will have more bottom end (acceleration) and pulling power and you will typically loose some top end speed.

The opposite is true by selecting a prop with higher numbers.
Be careful, picking the wrong prop can kill your all around performance.

Ideal for use around logs and stumps. I've seen custom made units, just never knew they had been commercially made as well....
