Here is another example to calculate your weights. Philip.

Philip, I have the 4.7 Magnum, 235 hp @ 4800 .... 295ft-lb/3200 rpm
Payload 1,450 lb
Traler Weight 4,800 lb
GVWR 5,600 lb
GCWR 9,500 lb
I've got an 03 Durango (same as your Dakota) and a 2500HD pickup. I use a 16' trailer, buy the 18' trailer I know I will next time. I can tow my B3030 with just the FEL and no backhoe with the Durango. It tows OK but you definatley know you've got a load on back and need to pay attension. Now if I have the backhoe on it's too much weight for the Durango, even the my 2500HD feels like it has a good load on back. The added weight of the BH is what will put it over the weight limit.

Theres no doubt the 4.7 engine has the power to get the job done, it's the other parts of the truck to be concerned about, axle weight rating, frame, hitch, springs, brakes, tires, stability, weight, etc. Philip

From my limited experience: you can tow anything with anything a short way & get away with it. Done it. But push it like some of my friends have = ruined tranny or, far worse, an accident. I'm not a safety cop but don't wanta kill somebody.

Use the search function here in the trailer subforum. I did & got a decent 18' trailer w. dual brakes + a brake controller & glad I did. No need to go crazy but trust me, I can feel my ~5500# tractor/implements/trailer load behind my truck a ton (!) more than my 2500-odd pound boat.

Nobody really emphasized this but I would ensure whatever you got has good electronic brakes and you have a good controller in the cab. I pull around my BX1830 with the FEL, tiller, and misc things and also my friends toro dingo with lots of attachments (thats near your weight) on a 16' double axel and it works great but it has great brakes. My friend has a similar trailer and pulls with a very large pickup but his trailer doesn't have brakes and it makes for a much scarier trailering trip. It seems every time we have that trailer every moron in the county pulls out in front of me last minute. As an fyi I got my trailer from Agrisupply (made by Shivers in GA) for around $2k and I love it. Max load is 7.5k.

+1 on the brakes. Trailering anything of size/weight without brakes is just a bad idea - and illegal in some states.

I must be the only one on the planet, but I run hydraulic surge brakes w/Kodiak disks on my 7500# boat trailer and my 5000# ramp trailer. Both axles of course.

Properly functioning disk surge brakes are self-modulating and - for me at least - work very well. Drum surge brakes, not so much.

Like I said, I may be the only one around here who thinks so.

Z.

I have a B2920 with FEL and backhoe also. I called Kubota technical and they told me the weight like this is 2800 lbs. I haul mine on a 16 ft single axle with brakes and it works fine.

While bigger is better if you ever need it, too big will take away your available payload. I ended up with 20' trailer that meets my needs, but I have a 2500HD to pull it.
