Problem is, it's NEVER paid off. You fail to pay the real estate taxes, you loose the dwelling and land to the county and they auction it off and if they garner less than what you owe (if you owe anything), they come after you for the difference.
Under current tax laws, it's never paid off. You just 'rent' it.
Govermnet entities always get their 'pound of flesh', no matter what. My personal opinion on that is it's BS but it is what it is. I don't think that anyone over the age of 65 should have to pay RE taxes and especially school operating taxes as no one I know of over 65, has school age kids.
Better to rent than own in many cases. renters don't pay RE taxes and most have school age kids as well. Having said that I do incorporate the RE tax burden in the monthly rent, so they do but indirectly and with 4 rental properties that tax burden is quite large. Least 3 of the 4 are paid off and the 4th one is close.
I think the property taxes in my county are very reasonable and are actually used for things that I can see: fire district, roads, and yes local schools. When my kids were in school, older people paid for them and I’m ok with paying for the next generation, provided that the cost is reasonable, and in my case it is.Problem is, it's NEVER paid off.
