Local JD dealership just sent me a flyer "Premium Winter Checklist" that has prices for all Deere models...hmmm, my 4210 has a price of $249 PLUS PARTS.

It covers:

Air filter, pre cleaner, fuel filter, spark plug replaced. Wow, I didn't know my Deere had spark plugs. I can replace the filters in ten minutes.

Carb checked (yeah, right) Gee, a diesel engine with a carb...

Change oil and filter (which I can do in ten minutes)

Freeze point check, add coolant if needed, check tire pressures (ten more minutes here)

Check and adjust PTO (really?)

Check tire pressure and brake operation (five minutes, max)

Clean battery and check charging system (they mean rinse off the battery and check to see if the alt. light stays off) (five minutes, max)

Inspect belts, sheaves, and idlers, mower deck removed and cleaned, sharpen and balance blades (one hour max for me)

Check transmission level and safety systems and full test run (ten more minutes)

Quick COSMETIC wash (emphasis added) ten minutes more

I can do everything they quote me $249 for in less than two hours and I won't have to pay them $75 pickup and delivery either. Or pay their huge markup on parts.

All these sale flyers are is basically a scam to get you to have your equipment taken in and then they will call you "Oh, you need a hydro system flush and new fiters, you need all new drive belts, you need new deck belts, you need a coolant flush and refill....etc".

I really feel sorry for the tractor owners who don't have the tools and mechanical aptitude to do such basic maintenance operations themselves. I have 930 hours on my Deere and it was new in spring 2003...it has NEVER spent a minute in a shop.

Same way for auto dealers 14 point inspection my arse. Some snot nosed kid with zero common sense looking at my brakes. No way do I fall for this, but it's a billion dollar scam I am sure. I bought a brand new car for my wife that includes 2 years of inspections ! Lol !,,,

All the more reason why it pays to learn all you can about your equipment and maintain it yourself to the maximum extent you can.

Life is much more expensive if you don't make yourself handy!
