Just did this myself. Rented a Bluebird edger from local rental yard. Most of my edging was going into packed gravel and money well spent!

I've thought about something like this based on the 3PT auger I already have. I imagine a modified frame turning the auger to the side and lowering it a bit, and perhaps a small variety of rotary attachments and shaft extensions to replace the auger bit.

What about a subsoiler? You'd want to weld up something to offset it to one side.

I lowered one of the scarifiers on my box blade to make a shallow trench. It worked fine.

I had great success with the gas powered edger and might not continue with the coulter project.....but I did grab it out of storage this weekend and, well, it might still happen.

I have a shank mounted to a ssga plate for ripping trenches across my driveway as water cuts.
This has a cultivator sweep added to a ripper shank as I wanted a V shaped ditch. Without the sweep it was just a narrow slice.
