Wanting to "cut" a slot in the ground

I'm envisioning a disc that rotates, attached to the side of a bucket, so that when lowered and driven along, it makes a cut in the ground.

This would be to install edging, to keep a mulched area separate from the lawn, so I would want to go approximately 3-4" below grade.

Firstly, is there such a thing commercially available? I've done some searching but have no idea what it might be called. The closest I've found is a "pipe layer", but one key factor is that it needs to be at the side of the tractor. Between my son and I we could probably modify something if it was out there.

If not, any ideas/suggestions as to how one might be made? I have immediate use to install about 300LF of edging, and a lot more in the future, and don't look forward to doing this all by hand...

It’s called a trencher. What is your exact use? How far do you have to go? Would one of those sidewalk edgers work? Some of those are gas powered on wheels.

If you decide on an edger don't get one with a vertical engine because the belt will need to have a twist in it to power the blade. It will eat belts. Get one with a horizontal output shaft so there doesn't need to be a twist in the belt.

Our local sod installation company uses a blade on a weed eater set at a 90 degree angle to cut and trim sod during installations, carving out flower beds, etc...

The local university has this on a Toro Workman. It's just a disk with pressure. Works well.

I have my old Craftsman electric edger that I've had since 1985 if I need to edge the driveway.

I have a plowshare set on a quick attach plate that I use to trench in poly pipe into the ground about 8" deep. That would work to slice and edge for edging.

Most of the time I just use a tool like this...

A plow coulter would possibly do what you want. Cheap to try as used ones abound.

Would also be easy to mount to side of your bucket.

I've had a belt drive McLane I've used at the house for years. Yeah, I've gone through 3-4 belts over the course of about 10 years, but I'd consider the cost vs. use in buying one. Belts are cheap, and the link ones are easy to change out.

Do you have a picture of this? It sounds like it might be what I need.
