Walmart - End of an Era

I haven't seen a greeter at my local WM in a couple of weeks and didn't think about it until I saw Bird's thread. You'd think they make so much profit as it is that they can pay greeters if they want to. One of my neighbors was a greeter, and I haven't seen him to ask him what's up.

WM and Dollar General have different models. DG is still focused on the smaller store concept with an inventory more focused towards basics versus the WM superstore almost everything approach.

I can remember when the local DG store here had tables of shirts tossed out on display tables and not much merchandise compared to today's stores. They seem to expanding with more stores and more merchandise than before.

The problem with WM is that when they catch a cold, what is everyone else going to come down with?

The dollar bargain stores seem to me to undercut both WM and DG on what they have.

Aaaaaaaa, my eyes.

Sad about the greeters, another step away from personalization. Anybody remember elevator attendants? I don't but I'd sure like to.

Yep, I actually do remember when they had elevator operators in office buildings, hospitals, etc. Instead of having buttons to push for the different floors, they just had a lever with a handle to move one direction for "Up" and the other for "Down" and the operator just had to know how to stop the elevator so its floor would be even with the floor for you to get on or off.

We just have the old small original Walmart here but back a few years ago the FOrd dealer went Teats up. They sat on what was the perfect site for a Super Walmart. One of the local families that have several businesses bought the land out that Walmart was looking at. They figured it for the best of the local businesses.

ALot of folks scorned him over it as we have to run the Corinth if we want something from the big Walmart. I can give a few cents over WM prices if its local. Also most things that I really need doesnt come from WM. We buy our oil in bulk, tires from local dealers and shop around. Alot of times I often have to drive 45 to 70 miles to get some things at a savings like car and equpment parts.

My friends garden center across from WM does well He stocks mostly made in USA products, locally grown plants and other services and hands on service. He also sells locally grown and made products. One of our local grocers does the same and another is starting this season.

I to think DG will be the new WM, they stock things like coin rollers, recipt books, stationary, Ive noticed otherthing at the local DGthat arent in WM. It seemed that when we got a SuperCenter 21 miles away alot of the local businesses either shut down or quit carrying alot of special items like the local hardwares carried. Alot of it to was some of the local stores attitudes to. We had a few store owners that acted like you should be glad to be there.

Lately with the economy alot of the ones with bad attitudes have really changed and are carrying more special items and their attitudes and service has gotten alot better.

I like Walmart. I like knowing that when I see one, no matter where I am, I can go there and get what I want. They are easy to find and just about everywhere. There are four of them near me, and during the course of the day, I'm usually close to one of them. While I have my favorites, they all get the job done and I'm appreciative to have them.

I don't understand those who don't like Walmart. The people that I know who work there love it. In fact, I don't know anybody who has worked there that has anything bad to say about it. Maybe it's a local thing and it's different in other areas?

What really baffles me is why some people hate Walmart? or get upset at them making a profit. Walmart came in, created a market and supplies a need. The local Mom and Pop stores that go out of business because they cannot compete. It's either service, convienence or price. What ever the reason, as a consumber, I want to go where I can get the best price and service.

Eddie, I have to agree with you about them. Before them it was Sears and Kmart..Walmart just wanted to grow, but they do force others out of business..The economy is not doing very well either...So walmart might just fall to it's own forces?? I really hate the Doorgreeters are being removed, they were mostly retired here and could use the extra income. I guess ,Now they will have to Hire a Security person at the door.

Name one business that has grown that didn't force another out of business in the free market? Either do better or go away. Its what works and how it should be.
