Hi there, I'd be interested in impressions of these type of machine. How do DR, Graverly etc compare? If anyone had any dealers or prices for eastern Canada I'd be very grateful. Thanks alot!

You might want to do a search for Billy Goat, Gravely and DR brush cutters. Know that there are several different threads in this section and also in attachments which discuss the pro's and con's of brush cutters.

A friend has a dr walk behind cutter.. he mows 1 acre around his house with it ( out of 5 )... he has mostly bramble, dog fennel, and poison ivy.

Seems to do the job fine.

DR type brush cutters work very well. I use one to keep brush and blackberry bushes from encroaching on the hunting shack. Also use it to open and maintain some trails through the woods. Takes down two inch poplar with just a little slow down in engine speed. Mows June grass, brush, bushes, shrubs, etc all about as fast as you care to walk. It's just so handy and works so well, I've never been able to justify a brush mower for the tractor.

I live 5 miles from Vergennes, VT, where the DR Brushcutters are made. I've seen a bunch of them in use. I believe they also come with a 30 day money back, no questions asked guarantee. If you are in the market for a walk behind, these are some good machines.

I own both a DR brush mower and a 1970's Gravely with a brush deck (as well as other attachments). To make a long comparision short, I'll say that both machines are good. However the Gravely makes the DR look like a toy. There is not a single chain or belt on the Gravely (all gear drive) plus it has a pto which can drive about 25 different attachments. The Gravelys from the 1940's still run and are used everyday on farms. Try that with a lesser machine. You can pick up a used Gravely for around $600.00 or less on E-bay.
The DR works good and I use it for finish mowing because I don't yet have a Gravely finish deck. I have had the DR 3 years now, it has had the frame welded once, chain sprocket replaced and the engine now blows blue smoke. I have to check nuts and bolts for tightness constantly because they have a tendecy to fall off. The only real advantage of the DR is that it turns easier and is more manueverable because of its much lighter weight. Hope this helps.
Steve.
